Autobiographical memories are memories about personally experienced events that go beyond the mere factual description of the event to includ personal beliefs, thoughts, and emotions, and autobiographical memory is very closely related to the self. The current research on autobiographical memory mainly focuses on two aspects: the generalization of autobiographical memory and the coherence of autobiographical memory.Autobiographical memory generalization is closely related to depression and posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD),and the coherence of autobiographical memory is also closely related to various psychological problems.A very important mechanism for the generation of autobiographical memory generalization and coherence is the Ca R-FA-X model, but the interpretation of the Ca R-FA-X model is currently controversial, and the results of the study are inconsistent, especially the interpretation of coherence in the Ca R-FA-X model lacks more empirical research. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of capture and rumination in the Ca R-FA-X model on generalization and coherence of autobiographical memory. This study consisted of two experiments, experiment 1 recruited 197 college students from a university in Henan Province, using a mixed experimental design of 2(Capture: first person, third person)×3(Rumination: positive rumination, negative rumination, distraction)× 3(Cue Word Valence: positive, negative, neutral),in which rumination and capture were the intergroup variables, and the cue word valence was the intragroup variable, and the dependent variable was the degree of generalization of autobiographical memory, the AMT paradigm was used to examine the effects of capture and rumination on the generalization of autobiographical memory.Experiment 2 recruited 180 college students from a university in Henan Province, using a mixed experimental design of 2(Capture: first person, third person)×3(Rumination: positive rumination, negative rumination,distraction)×2(Event valence :positive, negative),in which rumination and capture were intergroup variables, the event valence was intragroup variable, and dependent variable was the coherence of autobiographical memory, the thematic narrative task was used to examine the effects of capture and rumination on the coherence of autobiographical memory. The results showed that:(1)For autobiographical memory generalization, the main effect of rumination was not significant, the main effect of capture was significant, the degree of autobiographical memory generalization of the third-person perspective was significantly lower that of autobiographical memory generalization of the first-person perspective, and the main effect of the cue word valence was significant, the degree of autobiographical memory generalization of positive cue words was significantly lower than that of negative cue words, and the degree of generalization of autobiographical memory of negative cue words was significantly lower than that of neutral cue words.(2)For the coherence of autobiographical memory, the main effect of rumination was not significant, the main effect of capture was not significant, and the main effect of the event valence was significant, and the level of autobiographical memory coherence of positive events was significantly higher than that of negative events. The interaction effect between rumination and the event valence was significant, and under the condition of positive rumination, the level of autobiographical memory coherence of positive events was significantly higher than that of negative events.Under the conditions of distraction, the level of coherence of autobiographical memory of positive events was significantly higher than that of negative events. The results of this study provide a new perspective on clinical counseling and treatment, which can improve their psychological symptoms such as depression and PTSD by changing the perspective of the client’s view of the problem and by guiding the client to recall their past experiences from a more positive perspective to change their autobiographical memory at the level of generalization and coherence. And normal people can also better control their emotions and live a happier life in this way.
