In daily life and clinical treatment, people often use various explicit emotion regulation strategies such as cognitive reappraisal and distraction to regulate their emotions when faced with negative emotions. In recent years, researchers have found that implicit emotion regulation also has a positive effect on improving individual emotional experience. As a common implicit regulation mode, emotion labeling can not only quickly and effectively affect individual emotional experience, but also affect the use of other emotion regulation strategies(such as cognitive reappraisal). At present, although researchers have conducted a lot of discussions around emotion labeling and cognitive reappraisal, most of the existing studies focus on the regulatory effects of emotion labeling and cognitive reappraisal themselves, but less on the potential relationship between them. Therefore, exploring the effect of emotion labeling on cognitive reappraisal and the possible process mechanism from the perspective of integration is of great significance for improving the intervention effect of emotion regulation treatment.Based on this, this study conducted two studies to investigate the moderating effects of emotion labeling with different directivity and sources and the potential mechanisms of emotion labeling on the moderating effects of cognitive reappraisal.Specifically,Study I explored the possible relationship between emotion labeling and cognitive reappraisal by comparing the differences in subjective emotion rating and heart rate variability between cognitive reappraisal group with different directivity(internal and external)choice labeling and cognitive reappraisal group with cognitive reappraisal alone.Study II,based on the evaluation of the moderating effects of internal and external expressive labeling, compared the differences in subjective emotion rating, heart rate variability, and labeling rating responses between the cognitive reappraisal group with different directivity and source labeling and the cognitive reappraisal group, and then investigated the effect and underlying mechanism of emotional labeling on cognitive reappraisal. The results showed that:(1)there was a significant interaction effect between labeling direcency and source on the moderating effect of labeling.Specifically, under the condition of internal labeling, the effect of expression labeling was significantly stronger than that of choice labeling, while under the condition of external labeling, the effect of choice labeling was significantly stronger than that of expression labeling.(2)Emotion labeling from different sources had significant effects on cognitive reappraisal.Expression labeling had an inhibitory effect on cognitive reappraisal, while choice labeling had no significant effect on cognitive reappraisal.(3)Labeling reaction time completely mediated the relationship between labeling source and cognitive reappraisal. In summary, the results of this study show that:(1)the effect of emotion labeling is affected by both directivity and source;(2)Labeling directivity had no significant effect on cognitive reappraisal, but labeling source had different effects on cognitive reappraisal.Expressive labeling might inhibit cognitive reappraisal, and choice labeling had no significant effect on cognitive reappraisal.(3)Cognitive resource is an important mechanism by which annotation source affects cognitive reappraisal.
