| The translation text is selected from Chapter 1 “The Reality of Asian American Oppression” of the book The Myth of the Model Minority co-authored by American sociologists Rosalind S.Chou and Joe R.Feagin.It briefly reviews the history of Asian-Americans’ collective resistance to racism and offers policies and suggestions on the basis of what these courageous Asian-Americans have said.Selecting this chapter as the original text of the translation project, the translator aims at helping Asian Americans to view racial discrimination correctly and recognize their personal identity,in order to make contributions to eliminating racial discrimination and working for world peace.Dedicated to descriptive translation studies,Gideon Toury,an Israeli scholar, establishes the translation norms theory. He holds the belief that relevant norms are at work in every phase of the translation process and at every aspect of the translation, and these that restrict the selection of translators fall into three categories: preliminary norms, initial norms and operational norms.Under the guidance of Toury’s translation norms theory, the translator analyzes both the original text and its translation, selects prime examples from “The Reality of Asian American Oppression” to further study the guidance and application of this theory in the translation practice. Moreover,it classifies and summarizes the norms adopted in translation. The translator hopes that the report could be an inspiration and reference for the translation practice of relevant topics. |
