Research On Sports Work Of Chinese Young Women’s Christian Association,1911-1937

With the footsteps of Western learning eastward,modern women’s sports began to germinate and develop.Among them was a special group,the Chinese Young Women’s Christian Association,which had an important influence on the development of modern women’s sports.Studying her sports career can not only reflect a glimpse of the development of women’s sports in the period of the Republic of China,but also reflect the characteristics,conditions and social conditions of women’s sports culture in the period of the Republic of China from the side.This article uses the method of historical documents,expert interviews and mathematical statistics to collect,summarize and sort out the "Young Women" newspaper and related archives and documents.In order to further analyze the historical facts about the sports undertakings carried out by the Young Women’s Christian Association during the Republic of China,and to more accurately evaluate the contribution and historical role of the Young Women’s Christian Association in the development of modern women’s sports during the Republic of China.In terms of theory,the sports of the YWCA are guided by the theory of the social gospel,the theory of morality,intelligence,and group sports,and the theory of "physical strength Christianity".s method.In terms of practice,the YWCA trains female sports talents by establishing a sports normal school.Under the influence of the "social gospel" theory,the Young Women will gradually expand the sports audience.In addition,the YWCA pushes gender boundaries by leading women to participate in national and international sports events.The main research conclusions of this paper are as follows:First,through the analysis of the sports undertakings carried out by the YWCA,it can be found that the "sports" developed by it has the characteristics of a pan-body concept,which includes physical education,legitimate entertainment,sports games,gentleman spirit and hygiene,and has a certain secular trend.Second,during the spread of Western learning to the east,the Young Women Society has made some contributions to modern women’s sports.It is mainly reflected in the four aspects of physical education,social sports,sports games and the idea of equality and freedom.In terms of physical education,it has created an earlier female physical education normal school and trained early female physical education teachers.In social sports,the YWCA spread the concept of legitimate recreation,women’s sports and health campaigns.In sports,the YWCA promotes women’s participation in national and international sports and into the public sphere.As an opportunity and practical means,"sports" helps women liberate their bad habits such as foot binding and breast binding,liberate women’s body and mind,and break the stereotype that women regard tranquility as beauty.Third,the sports department of the YWCA has not been truly localized.Although the YWCA trained a group of female physical education teachers,its sports department eventually had no nationals to serve as sports leaders,and the sports cause in the late Republic of China had little effect.Fourth,the sports promoted by the YWCA have a strong religious color,and Christian ethics is the theoretical guidance for their development of sports.It uses sports to restore the sanctity of the female body and as a means of missionary work.Fifth,the sports culture spread by the YWCA,such as "the body,temple of God,the concept of spiritual and physical sports,and legitimate entertainment" is both a cultural invasion and a cultural invasion.Some enlightenment can be obtained by examining his sports career.First,sports has its own development rules and characteristics.The use of sports by the Young Women’s Association as a means of preaching will limit the development of sports.From a practical point of view,it is necessary to dig deeper and explore the development of sports disciplines with the changes of the times.Second,sports can be used as a way to "empower" women’s bodies.Through social sports,physical education and other fields,"sports" can be used as a means to promote women’s awareness of their own bodies,sense of mastery and leadership.Third,it can promote the development or establishment of women’s sports organizations.Fourth,sports can be made into a form of charity and a flow of kindness.
