This thesis focuses on the Christian church's work on Chinese women. The church showed great solicitude for the women's problem of modern China. It not only propagated in forms such as newspapers, journals but also did highly effective work in anti-footbinding, setting up girls' school and raising women's social status. The thesis searched and used broadly the Chinese and English materials such as The Review of The Times and The China Mission Year Book. Based on these materials and under the instruction of the materialist conception of history, it expounds and analyzes the Christian work on Chinese women mentioned above in order to comprehend the Christian church's work in modern China comprehensively.With women's disparity between West and China as a starting point, the thesis firstly analyzes the reason why the church showed great solicitude for the evangelistic work on Chinese women. Then, it inspects the Christian church's effort on how to improve Chinese women's living condition and promote their social status. The main body of the thesis contains four parts of the Christian church's work in detail: they are respectively anti-footbinding, setting up girls' school, carrying out maternal hygiene and raising women's social status. In the end, the reason why the church showed great solicitude for women's work and the influence of these work has been discussed.Footbinding was an undesirable customs that had lasted for more than one thousand years and was violently assailed by the Christian church. The thesis comprehensively expounds the Christian church's opinion against foot-binding, gives a brief account of the anti-footbinding movement with some typical districts as examples and in the end ail-roundly analyzes the influence of the Christian anti-footbinding movement. The Christian anti-footbinding movement played a positive role in both reforming pernicious customs and liberating women and extricated women from bodily injury.In ancient China, women were deprived of the right of education, but the first girls' school in modern China was founded by the Christian church. To begin with, the thesis compares the education condition for women in western countries with that in China so as to reveal that education for women in China was far behind the times.Then, based on a great deal English materials, with the more exact statistics, the thesis shows the developing process of the girls' schools, explains the influence of girls' schools on Chinese women, social morals and education policy of Chinese government. The setting up of girls' school improved standard of education of Chinese women, found a path to enhance their actual strength and display their aptitude. Its most significant meaning was to promote the awaking and liberation of women.Owing to backward of the medical science, the physical condition of Chinese women was in a state of anxiety. The Christian church's effort on improving Chinese women's health standard can't be ignored. The thesis exhibits the development of gynaecology and obstetrics in western countries, gives a brief account on the foundation and development of the hospitals for women and points out how the Christian church improved the health standard of Chinese women. The Christian church's medical work on women improved the maternal health condition, reduced the suffering of women and even promoted the constitution of the whole of the Chinese nation.Chinese women's social status was inferior in ancient China. The Christian church played a very important role in changing this condition. The thesis exhibits the living condition and social status of foreign women, analyzes the opinion which introduced the living condition of foreign women and assaulted the undesirable customs about Chinese women, inquires into not only the relation between the Christian church and the improvement of Chinese women's living condition and social status but also the effect on the awaking and liberation of Chinese women.Moreover, the thesis, taking The Review of The Times, The China Mission Year Book and The...
