The translation of culture plays an important role in shaping a nation’s international image.Chinese Red,as a series of books strongly recommended by China, covers many aspects of splendid Chinese traditional cultures and to some extent, represents the cultural image of China. But since the day of publication, they haven’t had desirable effects in foreign countries due to all kinds of hidden problems and few home scholars have done researches on it from the viewpoint of translation criticism. Thus,it is necessary to conduct studies of the translation of Chinese culture from the perspective of translation criticism. The paper, based on Antoine Berman’s theory of translation criticism, takes Nvivo12 as the tool of qualitative analysis and selects three books of Chinese Red,which are respectively Chinese Fans,Ancient Costumes and Accessories and Paper Cutting,to make an analysis. The qualitative data reveal two points. One is that the target text fails to follow the ethical and poetic standards. It leads to large amounts of problematic textual zones in grammar and culture and comparatively poor readability and acceptability of the target text. The other is that the initiative of the translator is relatively evident. It can be clearly embodied in the translators’ random modifications and deletions of the source text. Some representative examples are chosen to make a detailed analysis.Through analyzing the concrete examples, three main reasons causing the problematic textual zones are summarized: 1)the translators’ inadequate translation potential;2)the translators’ awareness of professional ethics;3)the Publishing House’s lack of institutionalized quality control on translation program management. Then five optimized strategies under the ethical and poetic standards are raised accordingly: 1)transliteration plus annotation under the ethical standard;2)literal and free translation under the ethical standard;3)amplification and omission under the poetic standard;4)conversion under the poetic standard;5)translation program management. The purposes of the paper lie in making preparations for retranslation and reminding publishing houses and cultural administration department of the government to pay greater attention to the issues concerning the translation of Chinese culture. It will also provide some valuable suggestions to the quality control of the translation of Chinese culture.By doing so,the spread of international image of China can be put on the right track and the probability of the world’s misjudgment on China’s image can be minimized.
