Causes Of Misinterpretation And Omission In Spanish-Chinese Consecutive Interpreting And Coping Strategies

The accuracy and completeness of the information in the target language is one of the most important criteria for the quality of consecutive interpretation.However,in the real situation,the interpreters have to deal with different tasks at the same time in the phase one of consecutive interpretation,such as listening and analysis,note-taking,which will probably lead to misinterpretation and omission in the phase two.Therefore,this thesis takes the Covid-19 speech by the President of Argentina as an example to discuss the causes of misinterpretation and omission in Spanish-Chinese consecutive interpretation and its coping strategies.First of all,the author combines the previous researches and her own practical experience to define the misinterpretation and omission in Spanish-Chinese consecutive interpretation and classify them into four categories,“structural misinterpretation,partial misinterpretation,structural omission and partial omission”,as well as analyze the importance of reducing such problems.Secondly,the author introduces the case of the thesis and reviews the situation of misinterpretation and omission in the mock conference.Thirdly,on the basis of specific examples,the author explains and analyzes the causes of misinterpretation and omission from two aspects: insufficient listening and analysis and improper note-taking.Finally,according to the two reasons above,the author proposes the coping strategies respectively: enhance listening and analysis ability,including “strengthen analysis ability,enhance the listening of numbers and enrich extralinguistic knowledge”;optimize note-taking skills,including “highlight logical structure of notes and standardize abstract symbols”.
