A Study Of Synesthesia Translation Of Glück’s Faithful And Virtuous Night From The Perspective Of Concept Integration Theory

Synesthesia has always been regarded as a rhetorical technique in traditional rhetoric.However,as cognitive linguistics has been developed,synesthesia has become a cognitive mode of thinking and action.Synesthetic metaphor is a special variant of general metaphor which can be studied from the perspective of cognition.First of all,this thesis briefly introduced the research of synesthetic metaphor and Glück’s poetry.Then,it elaborated CIT and analyzed the synaesthesia metaphors in Faithful and Virtuous Night.This thesis made a systematic study of synesthetic metaphors by comparing the original texts with the translation of synesthetic metaphors by Liu Xiangyang and Fan Jingye.Under the framework of CIT,this thesis analyzed the cognitive projection of translators’ concept integration and explored the cognitive mechanism of translators’ concept integration.The objectives of this thesis were to answer the following questions: First,First,what kinds of synesthetic metaphors were used for Faithful and Virtuous Night? Second,how was Concept Integration Theory(CIT)applied to these synesthesia metaphors? Finally,what are the different translation strategies of synesthetic metaphors? Why?The main findings are as follows: Firstly,CIT can be applied to the translation processes of synaesthesia metaphors.The synesthetic metaphors can be regarded as the mapping and mutual blending of different mental spaces.The target domain of mind is most in synaesthesia metaphor,and the direction of synaesthesia transfer conforms to Ullman’s synaesthesia hierarchy distribution.Secondly,synesthetic metaphor theory plays a guiding role in translation.Finally,synaesthesia usually reflects the emotional changes of the characters in the works.The appearance of different synesthetic metaphors is an important clue to their mental activities.It is the mental activities which contain the mental state that constantly and dynamically construct the meanings of literary works.Therefore,a synesthetic metaphor can help translators better understand the subject.CIT provides a good way to perceive and construct the world.There is little discussion on the appropriateness of the translation of synesthetic metaphors in literary works,and even less systematic and detailed analysis and discussion.In this thesis,under the framework of CIT,the psychological processes of synesthetic metaphor translations are revealed,which avoids the traditional idea that synesthetic metaphor is only regarded as a rhetorical and esthetic technique,and proves the powerful explanatory power of synesthetic metaphor translation.In addition to decoding and encoding,the translation processes were found to be constrained by many factors.The thesis hopes to provide some reference for the differences in synesthetic translations of Faithful and Virtuous Night.
