| Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House attracted the translators during the May Fourth Movement with its artistic value and the function of realistic criticism, and set off an upsurge of introduction and translation in China.More than ten Chinese translations have been produced from the May Fourth Movement till now, among which Pan Jiaxun’s version has withstood the test of time and remains to be chosen for research, reading, and textbooks, becoming the most classic version. The generation, dissemination, and acceptance of texts are indispensable stages in the process of literature canonization, and in the process of canonization of Pan’s translation, triple agents, namely, the translator, patron and reader have played a positive role. This thesis intends to explore how and what effects agents in translation contribute to the construction of translation canonization by studying Pan Jiaxun’s translation of A Doll’s House. This thesis mainly adopts historical document analysis and text comparative analysis method to discuss the related translation phenomena in the canonization of Pan Jiaxun’s translation of A Doll’s House from the perspective of agents.Firstly,it examines the translator’s translation practice and analyzes how it affects the translator’s translation strategies and the function of the translation at the literary and social levels.Secondly,it explores the role of patron in the process of dissemination through ideological and publishing patronage. Finally, the author analyzes the interpretation of reader’s evaluation on the canonicity of Pan Jiaxun’s translation. The study finds: Pan Jiaxun conveys concern for the social reality through translation, which is the internal force in the whole translation process. The patron is the discoverer of translation canon. From the perspective of ideology and economic patronage,Pan Jiaxun’s translation has been given the status of legalization and publication priority in different time and space. The reader leads the evaluation of the translated text, becoming the judge of the translated text at the reception level, and working with the above agents to promote its entry into the field of education and literary history. Thus,Pan’s translation of A Doll’s House becomes a canon. This thesis discusses the related issues about the translation canonization of A Doll’s House in the target culture. From one side, the study enriches translation studies on A Doll’s House based on the case study;from the other side, the theoretical perspective of agents in translation also extends the discussion about translation canonization at home. |
