| Cha Jing,as the first known monograph on tea in the world and part of Chinese culture, has played a big part in promoting the Chinese tea culture. The English translation of Cha Jing plays a significant role in the dissemination of traditional Chinese culture. The translation and communication of tea classics are directly related to their foreign cultures’ exchange, understanding, and acceptance. In this case, through the revised translation and communication model, this study makes a comparative analysis of the translation of Cha Jing by Francis Carpenter and Jiang Xin and Jiang Yi from the perspective of publishers, translators, communication purposes, and translation methods of cultural information and paratext. At the same time, the author summarizes the characteristics of tea classics with better translation effects and hopes to contribute to translation and communication, and guide further research, thus further promoting Chinese tea classics, tea culture, and tea civilization to go out better.Three methods are employed in the thesis: documentary methods, quantitative data analysis, and contrastive textual analysis. They are used to achieve the goals: identify the version with a better translation effect and summarize the characteristics. The thesis investigates the facts of its reception in English-speaking countries in terms of the following aspects: overseas library holdings, citations, the number of topics on Twitter, book reviews written by overseas scholars in academic journals, and readers’ comments on Amazon. The major findings of this research are as follows:(1)Carpenter’s version has been more widely accepted by overseas readers and scholars than Jiang’s version.(2)The apparent conscious purpose of Jiang’s version which is published by the Library of Chinese classics is often rejected by overseas readers.(3)Carpenter adopts different translation methods when it comes to different tea-specific terms.(4)Carpenter’s translation stimulates the audience’s aesthetic defamiliarization and arouses readers’ curiosity by adding a front cover, introduction, annotations, and illustrations. In a word, this paper presents the overall status of its acceptance, publication, translation, and dissemination in a more comprehensive way through a detailed and systematic analysis of Carpenter and Jiang’s translations of Cha Jing to further promote the translation and dissemination of Chinese tea culture and contribute Chinese tea knowledge and wisdom to the wider world. |
