| The world today is experiencing great changes that have not occurred in a century, and cultural exchanges, integration and encounters among countries are more frequent. In the face of such a complex international environment,it is crucial for China to improve international communication capacity, further implement the Chinese culture going-out strategy, and strengthen the national cultural soft power. Therefore, this translation project takes the academic paper “Hermeneutical Translation of Classics and Cultures: the Case of I Ching and China’s Inter-civilizational Dialogue” written by Allen Amrollah Hemmat as the source text.Hemmat offers readers a detailed description of the successful dissemination of the Chinese classic I Ching in the West and its great influence in various fields, and draws parallels between the translation strategies adopted by the West for the classic and the Western developments in hermeneutics philosophy. Finally, the author emphasizes the importance of intercultural dialogue and advocates cultural exchanges among different civilizations. As the source text involves proper names and academic expressions in the fields of hermeneutics, philosophy,I Ching, theology, psychology, mathematics, quantum mechanics, interpretation and translation, music and art,the translator often encounters cultural defaults at the lexical and textual levels during translation. Therefore, properly handling these cultural defaults in the source text to achieve coherence is a difficult point in the translation. The translator is guided by cultural default theory prompted by Wang Dongfeng and reconstruction of coherence theory. To deal with the cultural defaults in person names encountered in translation, the translator adopts translation methods such as using existing translation versions, transliteration, and zero translation; To handle the cultural defaults in academic terms, the translator adopts translation techniques of annotation and amplification; To compensate the cultural defaults in discourse, the translator adopts translation techniques of division and restructuring to achieve coherence in the translation.During translation, the translator has tried to take the cultural default and reconstruction of coherence theory as the guide to solve translation difficulties in academic texts. The translator has gained further understanding of the guiding theories as well as the application of related translation techniques.Besides, the translator has also enhanced the translation skills after the translation practice. It is also hoped that the translator’s practice can provide some reference for other translators’ translation work. |
