| The report is based on the subtitle of documentary series named Yunnan Ethnic Traditional Crafts.As a media work,it involves both expressive text and informative text.Therefore,the translator has to convey accurate information while reflecting culture deposits of the original text.Typical Chinese syntactic structures and culture-loaded words raise a prominent issue,default interpretation.The author analyzes translation strategies of such an issue via several cases.According to Default Semantics proposed by Jaszczolt,K.M.,the issue of default interpretation is analyzed from two aspects—syntactic default and semantics default.A translator may face problems in translating a Chinese sentence that has no subject or verbal predicate into English.At this point,instead of making literal translation which may result in syntactic mistake,the translator is suggested to interpretate original text and compensate the translation via supplementing or transforming other syntactic items in or out of the sentence based on the understanding and analysis of original logic.Furthermore,four-character words,jargon and slang in Chinese can also bring a semantics default for target readers.And the translator should convey functional-equivalent information in the translation as what original text expresses via analyzing upper or lower sense words or doing intralingual translation before interlingual translation.By such way,the translation can be supplemented with default semantics information.In addition,the author puts forward that conciseness should be considered in subtitle translation as what subtitle production technically requires.Relevant translation strategies also should pay attention to time and space limit of the technology.The author has gained a further understanding of subtitle translation through this practice and learned applying theoretical knowledge to practical translation,hoping this experience can be a guide for other translator who will also do the similar work. |
