| “Banna Style” is a piano suite written by Yunnan composer Xia Liang that combines modern piano composition techniques with the Dai musical style.The work consists of five pieces: "Forest","Dance of Water","Love","Butterfly Play" and "Point and Gong",each with its own narrative title,showing the unique natural geography of the Xishuangbanna region and the unique folk culture of the Dai people.The first chapter of this paper introduces composer Xia Liang and the musical and cultural characteristics of Yunnan’s ethnic minorities,and provides a brief overview of the piano suite“Banna Style”.The first section analyses the ethnic musical elements of the work,which are mainly reflected in the traditional folk culture,natural and humanistic scenery,and daily production life of Yunnan’s ethnic minorities;the second section discusses the gentle,delicate,and chanting Dai melodies in the work;the third section analyses the work’s imitation of the complex and varied rhythms of the Dai instruments point and gong;The fourth section analyses the folk pentatonic structure and chromaticisation system of the work,and discusses the compositional characteristics of the work,which combine folk music vocabulary with modern compositional techniques.The third chapter analyses and explains the main points of the piece in terms of the touch of the folk melody,the control of the double tones and chords in the folk harmony,the change of intensity in the complex and varied rhythms,and the use of the sustain and weak pedals. |
