As an interdiscipline,media semiotics has received widespread attention in recent years.However,translations in this field still need to be enriched,and related translation methods for such academic works need to be further systematized.This report selects Understanding Media Semiotics(Second Edition)as its source text,analyzing and summarizing translation methods and strategies of different patterns under the guidance of thematic progression theory.The source text interprets media semiotics in a popular way with easy-to-understand expressions,which can get a wider audience than other academic works.Translating this book into China will arouse more target readers’ interest to media semiotics and broaden their horizons.Thematic progression theory is a concept of systemic functional linguistics,which focuses on the thematic structure within a text and the relationship among clauses,making the text complete and logical to some extent.This report refers to specific cases to analyze five thematic progression patterns: constant theme pattern,constant rheme pattern,continuity pattern,alternative pattern and complex pattern,supplemented by appropriate translation methods and techniques such as addition,reduction,separation,and conversion,and discusses the key and difficult points of translation,hoping to improve the cohesion and coherence of translated texts.Under the guidance of thematic progression theory,this report analyzes the translation methods of such academic works,and summarizes the problems and shortcomings in the hope of improving translation level and quality.Besides,the author hopes this report can provide some reference for the translation of other similar texts.
