| Marianne Moore,a highly influential American poet of the 20 th century,was recognized with numerous awards including the Pulitzer Prize and the National Medal for Literature.As a celebrity,Moore assumed the responsibility of exposing and addressing social defects in America.This thesis studies the covert progressions in Moore’s Cold War poetry in light of dual narrative progression theory,proposing that the covert progressions of integration,Diogenes’ glory and the virtue of modesty are the disenchantment of the utilities of freedom,glory,and justice in the covert progressions of America’s zero-sum games.The introduction provides an overview of Moore’s Cold War poetry and relevant research on this topic,along with the theoretical framework and thesis statement.Chapter Two examines the disenchantment of America’s “freedom”.Combined with the historical context of military competition and nuclear terror,Moore presents two covert progressions,America’s military game and the conception of integration.The former hinders the realization of freedom,reflecting Moore’s suspicion of enchanted “freedom”.The latter helps to maintain America’s republican polity and realize freedom,which is Moore’s way of disenchanting America’s“freedom”.Chapter Three explores the disenchantment of America’s “glory”.Based on the historical context of the US-Soviet cultural exchange policy,Moore presents two covert progressions,America’s political,cultural,and economic games and Diogenes’ glory.The former brings vanity,reflecting Moore’s suspicion of enchanted“glory”.The latter,the “pure glory” suggested by Moore,which emphasizes a natural lifestyle and cosmopolitanism,is Moore’s way of disenchanting America’s “glory”.Chapter Four focuses on the disenchantment of America’s “justice”.According to the historical background of Cold War propaganda,Moore presents two covert progressions,America’s diplomatic game and the virtue of modesty.The former brings inequality,reflecting Moore’s suspicion of enchanted “justice”.The latter is in favor of introspecting self-judgment,which is Moore’s way of disenchanting America’s “justice”.The conclusion highlights the theoretical and practical value of this thesis.The employment of the dual narrative progression theory not only enriches the narrative study of the poetry genre,but also reveals Cold War themes hidden in Moore’s poetry.Moreover,Moore’s rethinking of American core values,including freedom,glory,and justice,is still relevant for addressing conflicts in the present world.In summary,Moore’s Cold War poetry is a response to the Cold War,in which the dual narrative progressions exposed the enchanted American values under the Cold War and Moore’s strategies of disenchantment.This thesis asserts that the covert progressions of zero-sum games resulted in totalitarianism,vanity,and greed instead of freedom,glory,and justice for America,leading to a vicious cycle of division and public discord.The covert progressions of integration,Diogenes’ glory and modesty disenchanted the above values and embodied Moore’ utopian vision of world integration. |
