This report is based on the translation practice of Hi,I’m China 2(Sections 2-4of Chapter 2).With its broad coverage of geographical perspectives and time periods, the book shows the beauty of China’s nature and culture through a diverse geographical and temporal perspective. Its language is scientific, literary, accessible, and engaging.By helping the world to better understand China, this book has epochmaking and practical significance.Due to the differences in vocabulary, grammar, discourse and cultural contexts between Chinese and English languages, the author finds that there are a large number of default phenomena involved in the English translation practice of the source text. This results in the completeness and accuracy being only partially conveyed in translation. Thus, the author intends to focus on default phenomena and their corresponding translation strategies under the guidance of the default semantics theory by J.M.Jaszczolt and the notion of cultural translation by Susan Bassnett. Moreover, the author focuses on cultural default and semantic default. In view of default phenomena, the cultural compensation strategies are adopted, and the translation methods such as literal translation, free translation, interpretation and set translation are also adopted to improve the accuracy and readability of the translation.Through the translation practice, the author has honed a more in-depth consideration of the English translation of the default phenomena in popular science texts, and has analyzed and summarized the translation strategies and methods to deal with the relevant problems. The author hopes that this report can provide some reference for the English translation practice of default phenomena in other similar texts, both in the popular science genre and otherwise.
