It is important to improve students’ oral English in the teaching process.Teachers in junior high school focus on grammar and vocabulary, and spend most of their time in improving students’ scores, ignoring the improvement of oral English.Students have little enthusiasm for oral English learning, and many junior high school students have given up oral English learning. In order to change this situation, many researchers adopt different kinds of teaching methods in oral English teaching.Application of lexical chunks is among them. Many domestic scholars have done related researches about applying lexical chunks to oral English teaching, but they pay more attention to communicative competence instead of fluency and accuracy of oral English. Moreover, the subjects of most researches are college students, researches on students of junior high school are insufficient. This thesis pays attention to applying lexical chunks to oral English teaching in junior high school. It aims to answer the following three questions:1.How does the application of lexical chunks influence the accuracy of students’ oral English in junior high school?2.How does the application of lexical chunks influence the fluency of students’ oral English in junior high school?3.What is the students’ evaluation about the application of the lexical chunks in oral English teaching? Two parallel classes of experimental junior high school in Xuzhou were selected as the research subjects. In the experiment, the experimental class applied lexical chunks to oral teaching, the control class adopted traditional teaching method. In the experiment, the author chose ratio of error-free T-units and the ratio of error-free lexical chunks to evaluate accuracy of oral English in both classes. The author used average speaking rate and average length of pause to evaluate the fluency. After the experiment, the author analyzed the data of pre-test and post-test,then evaluated the effects of applying lexical chunks in oral English.A questionnaire was conducted in the experimental class to examine students’ evaluation in application of lexical chunks. In order to make the evaluation more valid,12 subjects of experimental class were randomly selected to participate in the interview. After the interview, the author collected the data to analyze the evaluation of application in lexical chunks.Data analysis was made up of quantitative data analysis and qualitative data analysis.EXCLE was used to analyze related data. The experiment drew the following conclusions:1.The ratio of error-free T-units and the ratio of error-free lexical chunks in both classes have increased. But the experimental class made more progress than control class. That indicated that accuracy of oral English have improved in both classes, but the experimental class improved more.2.The average speaking rate increased while the average length of pause decreased in experimental class. But the control class had little changes after the experiment. It indicated that the fluency of oral English in experimental class has improved. But the control class had little progress.3.After the experiment, students’ evaluation of applying lexical chunks to oral English teaching in experimental class has changed from different aspects, such as learning interests, learning atmosphere, interaction between teachers and students, learning effects and senses of achievement. Most of students were satisfied with applying lexical chunks to oral English teaching. This study proves that lexical chunks can be applied to oral English teaching in junior high schools, which indicates that lexical chunks have a certain positive significance to oral English teaching. This study suggests that students’ awareness of chunks should be improved in the future teaching, and students should be guided to use chunks to improve accuracy and fluency of oral English in the future learning. However, there are still some shortcomings and deficiencies in the application of lexical chunks in the oral teaching of junior high schools. In the future teaching, how to combine the reciting and lexical chunks needs to be further improved. |
