The Huang clan is a Taoist family that has been passed down for twenty-eight generations, and the origin of the family’s Taoist heritage can be traced back to the Southern Song Dynasty. The Huang family hadn’t made it to have accurate chronological date until the Tianshun period of Ming Dynasty, prior to which the genealogical records lacked accurate chronological time. Thus, the contents of the genealogical records may be slightly different from the real situation of the family. The ancestor of the Huang family traces its origin to the famous literary scholar of the Northern Song Dynasty, but its first ancestor was Yutai Gong living in the Tianshun period of the Ming Dynasty. The genealogy of the Huang clan has been renewed in 2008,and there are four editions of the genealogy. The first chapter of this paper is a brief overview of the religious situation in the southeastern region of southeastern area of Hubei Province, and discusses the situation in which Daoism has been passed down and developed in the region. The second chapter focuses on the history of the Huang family lineage, laying the foundation for the subsequent content.Chapter 3explores the folkization and socialization of Daoism and the reasons for the fusion of Buddhism and Daoism, starting from the scriptures and oral knowledge passed down from generation to generation by the Daoist family with the surname Huang. The fourth chapter explains the inevitability of the modernization trend of Daoist culture by describing the improvements and transformations made by the Huang clan to cope with modern society. In addition, through the study and analysis of the history of Daoist heritage of the Daoist family of the surname Huang in southeastern area of Hubei Province, this paper reflects on the necessity of Daoism to achieve self-reinvention and self-creation in the new era,and raises the urgent problem for the development of contemporary Daoism: how to find a perfect fit between following the Daoist tradition and approaching to modernization.
