| Maurice Ravel is one of the leading figures of twentieth-century French music, and his works stand out from contemporary music with their colourful musical appeal.Ravel’s works have the dreamy, abstract style of the Impressionists, while retaining the refinement characteristic of French music. The Sonatine, one of Ravel’s earlier works for piano, has a classical structure with an impressionistic harmonic character. It is a milestone in the process of Ravel’s musical creation in which the ’old’ and the ’new’ merge and is an essential part of learning to play Ravel’s piano works. In the course of practising Ravel’s Sonatine,I have been fascinated by the exquisite, delicate compositional techniques and the unique harmonic effects of the works, and I would like to investigate Ravel’s Sonatine further. In this paper, the artistic style and performance techniques of Ravel’s Sonatine are explored in depth, using documentary research, analysis of scores and empirical summaries. The first chapter introduces Ravel’s life and his musical compositions, while delving into the background of the composition of the Sonatine. The second chapter analyses the Sonatine through its structure and artistic style. The third chapter summarises the technique of Ravel’s Sonatine based on this study and on his own performance experience. It is hoped that this paper will lead to a deeper understanding of the interpretation and artistic style of Ravel’s Sonatine. |
