This selection takes ’taste’,a traditional Chinese aesthetic category,as the topic of discussion, and explores the many concepts of ’taste’ in ancient calligraphy theory. As with’poetry by taste’,’calligraphy by taste’ also went through a stage of development from hazy to self-conscious."However,calligraphy,as a ’science of form’,transcends the appetite for taste and is gradually sublimated from a philosophical concept to a stylistic meaning and finally to an aesthetic form.In this paper,we have collected and collated the words for ’taste’ that appear in ancient calligraphy, and found that the taste words in calligraphy can be divided into traditional taste words, extended taste words and other sensory taste words, according to their lexical characteristics. The mechanism of association of different gustatory words introduces the aesthetics of ancient calligraphy into a complex aesthetic territory, thus revealing the powerful aesthetic radiation that Chinese calligraphy contains. On this basis,a case study is developed with Su Shi’s treatise on calligraphy,a famous literary scholar and calligrapher, whose ’treatise on the art of taste’ informs the idea of calligraphic aesthetics. The "taste-based calligraphy" is another area of aesthetic expression after "taste-based poetry",from which it is easy to see the extensive connections between taste aesthetics and classical Chinese aesthetics. In short, the study of the "taste" theory of calligraphy will not only clarify the aesthetic characteristics of Chinese calligraphy aesthetics, but will also inject new theoretical resources into the study of taste aesthetics in classical Chinese aesthetics, contributing to the enrichment of the history of Chinese aesthetics.
