A Report On The C-E Translation Of The Overseas Communication Of Chinese Art In The Context Of "Postmodernism" (Chapter Eight)

The source text of this translation practice report excerpts from the eighth chapter of The Overseas Communication of Chinese Art in the Context of “Postmodernism” written by Professor Zhang Qianyuan,a doctoral supervisor at the School of Art,Southeast University.This book provides a macro analysis of the situation for the overseas communication of contemporary Chinese art,and also enables more domestic artists to have a basic understanding of the trends of the international contemporary art exhibition.The translation practice comprises three sections,namely,the advantages of the“postmodern” context and the Chinese art communication,the analysis on the characteristics of the contemporary art biennale curation,and the communication strategies under the “postmodern” context and the biennale mechanism.As a cultural worker,the translator hopes to advance Chinese art,spread Chinese values,and truly promote Chinese art “going global” through this translation practice.This translation report is based on George Steiner’s hermeneutic translation theory.In his representative work After Babel: Aspects of Language and Translation(1975),Steiner proposed the hermeneutic motion with four steps,namely trust,aggression,incorporation,and compensation,which provided us with the integral process for translation.At present,there are relatively few studies that combine hermeneutic translation theory with the overseas dissemination of Chinese art texts.The original text uses many culture-loaded words and long complex sentences,which are the key and difficult issues that translators need to solve.After conducting detailed translation studies by the translator,the four steps have been applied one by one under the guidance of hermeneutic translation theory during the translation process.Translation methods and techniques such as addition,omission,explanation,transliteration plus annotation,and division also have been adopted to convey the meaning and language features of the original text to the target language readers so as to provide useful insights for the research on hermeneutic translation theory and the overseas dissemination of Chinese art in English translation.This report consists of five parts.Part one is a task description of the translation project,including the background of the translation project and the significance of the translation project.The second part is about the translation process,which consists of pre-translation,in-translation and post-translation.The third part is mainly about the theoretical basis of the translation practice.The fourth part is concerned about the use of the translation methods and techniques guided by the hermeneutic motion theory put forward by George Steiner,such as transliteration with annotation,explanation,addition,omission and division.The translator summarizes the gains and limitations in translation in the fifth part.
