In tasks of consecutive interpreting(CI),besides challenges from bilingual conversion,interpreters also encounter challenges triggered by different speaking styles,changing interpreting scenarios or high information density,etc.,through the process of rendering source language(SL)to target language(TL).This category of factors that affect interpreters’ performance is called input variables.The ease of obtaining and predicting information related to different input variables varies.For some of these input variables,interpreters can overcome them through long-term knowledge reserve,anticipation,pre-task preparation,and on-site questioning,but for some on-the-spot factors,i.e.input variables that are more unpredictable,interpreters need to adopt more targeted interpreting strategies to deal with the problems arising during the interpreting process.Given school students lack accessibility to on-site interpreting tasks and some part-time tasks have limited performance scenarios,students cannot fully recognize various input variables in real scenes.The Online Press Conference chosen in this report covered three sessions,general speeches,the Report presentation,and Questions and Answer(Q&A)session,which involve more comprehensive interpreting application scenarios and can highlight input variables and their influence on the performance of interpretation in different interpreting situation,and are valuable for analysis.Therefore,through simulating the Online Conference,the author compiled and analyzed the four types of input variables that appear frequently in the three sessions,then concluded the coping strategies.Through this practice,the author found that to cope with the influence of input variables on the performance of delivery,interpreters need to consider both on-line and off-line strategies of interpretation,namely the strategies for self-monitoring of the interpreting process and the strategies for the off-task stage.This report is intended to provide experience and reference for the author’s future interpreting practice and to provide readers with a deeper understanding of interpreting strategies. |
