A Crosscultural Study Of Roger Fry’s Art Theory Of Formalism

Roger Fry(1866-1934)was an important British formalism critic at the beginning of the 20 th century.He put forward the name of post-Impressionism and was the originator of modernist art theory.He played an important role in the development of modern art criticism and the promotion of modern art.In his formalism in the process of the establishment of art theory,he saw the traditional Chinese art,and adding some of these factors to their theory,especially concerned about the "rhythm" and "line" and to use,to carry out in Fry the art criticism theory.At the same time,the Chinese society is in transformation period,Chinese traditional culture and foreign thoughts are violent collisions,construction for Chinese traditional culture as the important element of Fry’s formalism art theory also came to China,and then promotes modernization process of Chinese art.To form the process of a cross-cultural ring mode.Thesis mainly divided into three parts,the first chapter starts from Fry’s cultural background,including the relationship between Bloomsbury Group,the Burlington Magazine,which Fry once edited,and Chinese culture,and tries to explore the importance of Chinese traditional culture in Fry’s daily communication and academic research.The second chapter discusses the Chinese factor in Fry’s art theory,and further discusses the role of traditional Chinese culture in Fry’s art theory by analyzing the relationship between traditional Chinese art and Fry’s art theory of formalism.The third chapter discusses the acceptance of Fry’s formalism art theory in China,from the absorption and transformation of his ideas by Chinese literati in the Republic of China to the study of his theory in contemporary academia.
