As the world economy grows and develops, international cultural exchanges and cooperation have embraced a sharp increase, and interpreting has also become an increasingly important work. The interpreting of cultural information has always been the focus and difficulty in the interpreting training and practical interpreting tasks.Although there are numerous researches about the omission of information in interpreting at home and abroad, and investigations about the omission of cultural information in interpreting also count for a large part in the Chinese interpreting study, there is still a lack of research on the omission of cultural information in C-E consecutive interpreting with the novice interpreter as the target of research. Therefore,to expand on this topic, this study aims for investigating novice interpreters’ omission of cultural information in C-E consecutive interpreting through an empirical research. With experiments and data analysis, this research will take translation scholar Anthony Pym’s conception on “low-risk” omission and “high-risk”omission as well as Daniel Gile’s Effort Model of consecutive interpreting as the theoretical structure, carrying out a series of experiments to explore the main characteristics and causes of novice interpreters’ omission of cultural information in C-E consecutive interpreting. This research attempts to explore two critical questions:(1)What are the main characteristics of novice interpreters’ omission of cultural information in C-E consecutive interpreting?(2)What are the causes of novice interpreters’ omission of cultural information in C-E consecutive interpreting?According to the characteristics of the research subjects and the experiment procedures, the author conducted the online questionnaires,C-E consecutive interpreting experiment and retrospective interview throughout the empirical study. To complete the whole experiments, the author invited a group of novice interpreters with similar interpreting training backgrounds as the experimental subjects, and all of them need to finish two online questionnaires, one online C-E consecutive interpreting experiment and one online retrospective interview. The questionnaire questions, consecutive interpreting material and retrospective interview were set up after a comprehensive consideration in order to investigate more accurately the main characteristics and causes of novice interpreters’ omission of cultural information in C-E consecutive interpreting. Before the C-E consecutive interpreting, every participant would be asked to faithfully fulfill the background questionnaire;during the interpreting experiment, all participants would fully complete the designed C-E consecutive interpreting and the author would record their interpreting performances;after the interpreting experiment, all participants would immediately take the second online questionnaire and be interviewed by the author afterwards. The major focuses of this research include all participants’ omissions in the C-E consecutive interpreting, their questionnaires and answers in the retrospective interview. Finally, after combining and analyzing all participants’ omissions of cultural information and their questionnaires and retrospective interviews, the following results and conclusions can be drawn:(1)For novice interpreters, the main characteristics of their omission of cultural information in C-E consecutive interpreting can be reflected on the types of omissions, and these omissions can be mainly classified into three types: low-risk omission,high-risk omission and intermediate-risk omission,i.e.omission that is between high and low risk levels,or omission that is difficult to be classified because its risk level may change with the context and audience.(2)Causes of the above omissions of cultural information are totally different: low-risk omission is mainly the voluntary choice made by novice group, and most of them take it as a practical interpreting strategy;high-risk omission is mainly due to various problems in novice interpreters’ listening capacity,note-taking ability, memory, linguistic capacity, background knowledge and psychological state. The author hopes that the above research results can help novice interpreters have a brief understanding on their main characteristics and causes of omissions of cultural information in C-E consecutive interpreting, assist them in improving their interpreting ability and provide some inspiration for future interpreting training of cultural information.
