This practice report is based on the translation practice of the book Coasting Past.Chinese junk is the most representative traditional water vehicle of China, but there are few studies on it at present. Therefore, the translation of such text is of great significance to carry forward the Chinese nautical culture. This report mainly discusses in detail from four aspects: translation task description, process analysis, the application of shifts theory in this report and translation summary.Under the guidance of shifts theory, this report conducts case studies on the representative translation examples mainly from two aspects: level shifts(tense and singular and plural shift)and category shifts(structure-shift,class-shift,unit-shift and intra-system-shift).It illustrates how English and Chinese can effectively convert in terms of words, grammar, syntax and so on,and effectively solves the language conversion problem in the process of translation. At the same time,it also analyzes the applicability of the theory to the nautical popular science text, which has certain theoretical significance and can provide reference for the translation of this kind of text in the future.
