Research On Narrative Strategy Of Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Regular Press Conference Under Discourse Game

The international situation today is complex,the international political landscape is undergoing major changes,and the world is facing "profound changes unseen in a century".As a major global public health event,COVID-19 has added uncertainty to the shift in the world order.Standing at the crossroads of "great changes",China is drawing more attention from the international community.As an official diplomatic agency,the Ministry of Foreign Affairs handles and coordinates relations between countries related to security and interests on behalf of the government.It is the forefront of China’s inter-governmental diplomatic activities and often becomes an important institution in the focus of international public opinion.The regular press conferences of the Foreign Ministry are responsible for presenting China’s position,telling China’s story and spreading China’s voice.They are not only an important part of China’s diplomatic discourse construction,but also an active and important participant in the international discourse game and the promotion of a new international communication order.In the new era,the Regular press conference of the Foreign Ministry is committed to safeguarding national security and interests,guided by the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind,and guided by the concept of "telling China’s story well and making China’s voice heard",and constantly pushing for changes in the narrative of external affairs.In particular,since the outbreak of COVID-19,the Regular press conferences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have set the international agenda by releasing information,countering the stigma of western countries led by the United States,and gradually building a discourse system that is dominated by China and the rest of the world,striving for the right to speak internationally and effectively safeguarding national security and national interests.This paper takes the regular press conferences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the main research object,focusing on issues related to "tracing the source of COVID-19" in the regular press conferences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from February 2020 to October 2021.The reason why I chose "Tracing the origin of COVID-19" as the topic for narrative analysis is that the issue of "tracing the origin of COVID-19" runs through all the questions related to COVID-19,and western countries continue to stigmatize China in this issue.Behind this issue is a comprehensive contest between national interests and public opinion.In this issue,China’s regular press conference has changed from a passive press conference to a game-changing press conference.Its external narrative logic,strategies and art are worth summarizing and studying.Based on the theory of narrative,this paper mainly studies how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes advantage of the open media scene like press conference and what narrative strategies and techniques are used to promote the formation and development of relevant issues through text analysis and case analysis.This paper discusses the narrative mode of the spokesperson of the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the three aspects of narrator,narrative perspective and narrative focus,and summarizes the shaping of China’s role image in the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs based on the narrative logic.The analysis shows that the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs plays the role of narrator on behalf of the country,and the reporter triggers the narrative process in the form of reflecting international public opinion.The interaction and cooperation between the reporter and the spokesperson is of great significance to the overall narrative.Spokesmen often adopt the way of comprehensive and cross-narrative,which completes the setting of international agenda and the guidance of public opinion through the selection of narrative content and the shift of narrative focus.From the narrative skill level,the author from the rhetorical use of strategic narrative and narrative,narrative style,the four aspects of intertextuality for use in the foreign ministry spokesman in narrative analysis of the narrative art of these constitute the spokesman speak good Chinese story,enhanced narrative empathy,spread the concept of human destiny community important narrative techniques.Through the research,it is found that the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the epitome of the war of national public opinion,and various international discourse games are permeated in the narrative construction process of key issues,among which the discourse tussle between China and the United States is the most significant.The spokesmen of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China use various narrative strategies and art to actively construct the narrative framework of "self-interest" and enhance discourse identity.The fundamental narrative logic behind it reflects the fundamental purpose of safeguarding China’s national interests and the diplomatic concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind.In the post-epidemic era,routine foreign Ministry journalists should take a more active role in the international public opinion war,enhance the storytelling and appeal of their discourse,and actively use new media platforms to tell China’s stories well and amplify China’s voice.
