Research On Progressive Alliance And Its Reshaping Of Social Democracy

In the 21st century,especially since the financial crisis of 2008,with the overall downward trend of social democracy in politics,it has gradually fallen into a situation of internal and external difficulties,and is facing serious ideological and organizational crises.It is against this background that a split has occurred within the Socialist International(SI).On the one hand,the core member parties,mainly the Social Democrats of Western Europe,are dissatisfied with the poor performance of the Socialist International and poor internal management.On the other hand,they want to reverse their own downward trend through cooperation.So they officially left Socialist International to form Progressive Alliance(PA)in 2013.From the perspective of Progress Alliance,a coalition of political parties,this paper conducts a comprehensive study of its establishment background,development status,ideas and prospects through historical analysis,comparative analysis and case analysis,and attempts to gain insight into the new trends of European social democracy,to grasp a series of new changes taking place in social democracy.Under the banner of "progressivism",the new Progressive Alliance has held dozens of conferences,seminars and forums in recent years.Through three development stages with different focuses,Progressive Alliance has established its organizational purpose,program,guiding principles and operational structure different from that of Socialist International,and its membership has continued to expand.In practice,Progress Alliance has been deeply involved in international affairs,actively assisting the struggle on global political and social issues,and cooperating with other progressive forces.It has become an important platform for social democrats to communicate and cooperate,and also had considerable influence in the social democratic movement."Progressivism" not only strongly criticized Neoliberalism,but also sublated traditional democratic socialism,trying to promote the transformation and revival of social democracy with a "progressive" political agenda.As the realistic carrier of this idea,Progressive Alliance explores the long-term development of capitalism under the traditional ideal of social democracy,and proposes three organizational values of "Freedom,Justice and Solidarity",which are implemented in the pursuit of democracy and equality.To a certain extent,"progressivism" provides a valuable reference for the confused social democrats,and also reflects the direction of social democratic reform.However,this concept also has many limitations.Whether it can play a role in the real political process is still uncertain.At present,European social democracy seems to have reached a"crossroads",facing a series of challenges and crises,and Progressive Alliance has to pass many tests if it wants to develop further.The recession and globalized capitalism,the rise of nationalist and populist forces,the decline in the attractiveness of social-democratic values,the decline of key member parties,and the competition with the Socialist International are all thorny issues that Progressive Alliance needs to deal with right away.Whether it can achieve breakthroughs in the systematization of theoretical programs,innovations in economic policies,member parties’ parliamentary struggles,and left-wing alliances affects the future development of Progressive Alliance,and also determines whether its ideas and practices can lead social democracy out of the predicament.
