| According to the 49 th China Internet Development Statistics report released by the China Internet Network Information Center in February 2022,as many as 99.5 percent of the elderly Internet users access and use the device as a "smart phone," far more than other types of media. The wide use of smart media, represented by smart phones, has brought digital opportunities and dividends to the development of society, but also brought a new governance problem: the digital divide barrier for the elderly.Based on this situation, taking the triple gap in the theory of digital divide "access gap-use gap-literacy gap" as the research venation, starting from the use of smart phones by the elderly, this article explores the specific problems faced by their smart media life in multi-dimensional aspects. And then, based on the research goal of improving the quality of their smart media life, taking the subjective and objective factors of the elderly as independent variables and the life satisfaction of the smart media as dependent variables, the influence of the relevant factors was analyzed. Finally, combining the problem of using smart phone and the important factors affecting the satisfaction of the elderly, this article puts forward some effective measures to help the elderly to cross the digital divide.Specifically, using the methods of questionnaire survey,in-depth interview and participant observation, this article is conducted in the urban and rural areas of Guangzhou,Foshan and Zhaoqing.SPSSAU 22.0(statistical analysis tool)was used to analyze the survey data.366 valid samples show that,in terms of access gap,the adoption of smart phones, the access of mobile Internet and the access intention of the elderly are related to their demographic characteristics,in particular,"rural areas" or "low monthly income level" of the elderly are more vulnerable to the digital divide. In terms of using gap,the old people are facing a lot of pain points in the process of using and operating, because of the decline of physiological function and the incompletion of the renovation and propaganda of "ageing-friendly" smart phones; What’s more, they mainly rely on younger generation’s digital back-feeding for smart phone using and learning, and their self-study desire is not enough, which may make them easy to face a dilemma in the social application scenario, and then affect their smart phone using experience. In terms of literacy gap, some of the elderly lack basic discernment, and the overall media literacy of the elderly group is only at the passing line; Therefore, four types of elderly in the context of the digital divide are classified by the dichotomy method, taking into account the situation of "Media Literacy + user needs" of the elderly, some suggestions are put forward to improve the quality of life and bridge the literacy gap of smart media, especially for the elderly with low media literacy.Based on a series of problems discovered in the above three gaps, this article probes into the causes of the digital divide from the level of "society-technology-elderly",analyzing the current shortcomings of the digital and population ageing society, such as lack of social support and so on;And based on the research goal of improving the quality of life of smart media for the elderly, the influence of subjective and objective factors on the quality of life satisfaction of smart media was investigated. The results show that the three subjective factors, including the smart media access intention, the experience of using smart phone, and the evaluation of smart media literacy can explain 56.0% of the variation of the satisfaction of life quality of smart media, far exceeding the 7.3% explanation of the objective factors of demographic characteristics, which means it is necessary to focus on improving the access intention, use experience and knowledge literacy of the elderly,in order to maximize the benefits to the elderly to hitch a ride on the digital society. Finally, under the international perspective of drawing on the advanced experience of the United States and Singapore, combined with the functional orientation of the social subjects and based on the ideas for bridging the triple digital divide, this article puts forward some effective strategies for China to solve the digital divide among the elderly groups, aiming at creating an "ageing-friendly" and Smart Society for the elderly, and then improve the quality of smart media life for the elderly and the whole society. |
