| The Sino-Myanmar relationship was symbolized as a "Pauk-Phaw"(kinsfolk)friendship.A turning point was brought about in the political atmosphere of Myanmar with a transition to democracy in 2010,and consequently,a large quantity of foreign aid started to set foot in Myanmar with different purposes under diverse networks.China also did not lag behind in implementing its own assistance programs like other countries,America’s USAID,Korea’s KOICA,and Japan’s JICA.Its support for the Myanmar education sector, which is implementing educational reforms throughout the democracy period, has become one of China’s key education aid strategies in Myanmar.Although China’s aid to education in Myanmar may not have been as substantial as that of other countries, its activities in Myanmar have gained recognition in recent years.Notably, the Chinese government offers a significant number of scholarships, surpassing even some powerful nations.Given Myanmar’s status as a developing countiy in dire need of human capital for its development,China’s educational support has played a crucial role in shaping policies across various sectors.Since no studies have been conducted on how China uses higher education to project its soft power in Myanmar, this study aims to have a deeper understanding on China’s education aid in Myanmar, with a specific focus on the Chinese Government Scholarship Programs, and analyze its potential impacts on Sino-Myanmar relations in terms of politics and people-to-people relations.Furthermore, the study explores the attitudes of Myanmar students who have been recipients of the Chinese Government Scholarship, providing valuable insights into their perspectives on Sino-Myanmar relations. This research serves as a practical endeavor to enhance understanding of China’s education aid in Myanmar, especially at the tertiary level. This paper further argues the underlying causes for being less popular scholarship and suggests to overcome that predicament. |
