Relevance theory has a powerful explanatory power for human communicative activities and is mainly concerned with the process by which people generate and understand discourse.Interrogation is also seen as a special kind of communicative activity between the investigator and the suspect,a typical institutional discourse, which is mainly concerned with the investigator’s influence on the suspect through discourse and the selection of appropriate interrogation strategies after understanding the suspect’s discourse. Therefore, the use of association theory to interpret interrogation discourse is an important guide to the study of interrogation discourse. In this paper,we use literature research, corpus analysis and crossdisciplinary research methods to develop the following contents of the study.Part One is an introduction. It introduces the background and significance of this paper, the current status of the research, the research ideas and methods, and in particular the sources of the corpus, which lay the foundation for the subsequent discussion.Part Two is an overview. It introduces the basic ideas of association theory-"association," "cognitive context," "association principle" "communicative model",and the embodiment of the principle of association in interrogation.Firstly, interrogation is also an explicit-reasoning process: as the speaker, the investigator must express his or her intentions accurately and precisely in order to change the suspect’s cognitive context and provide assistance in changing the suspect’s attitude towards confession;as the listener, the investigator has to identify and compare the suspect’s communicative intentions in order to provide a basis for applying interrogation questioning strategies in the next round. This provides the basis for the next round of interrogation.Secondly,as the interrogation is more often asked by the investigator as the speaker,in order to achieve the purpose of the interrogation, the investigator often has to use optimal correlations to change the suspect’s cognitive context so that he or she can correctly reason about his or her communicative intentions. In addition, this section concludes by explaining the value of the principle of relevance to interrogation interrogation in facilitating effective communication between the interrogating parties and responding to the need for equal conversation.Part Three analyses the failures of relevance in interrogation practice. The analysis of interrogation practice based on the principle of relevance reveals two main aspects of relevance failures in substantive interrogation, which limit the effectiveness of interrogation: firstly, the interrogation fails to elicit sufficient cognitive responses from the suspect, mainly due to the complexity of the information provided by the investigator and the mismatch between the investigator’s questioning and the suspect’s cognitive ability;secondly, the interrogation has a poor cognitive effect on the suspect. The main reasons for the poor cognitive effect of the questioning on the suspect include insufficient stimulation of the suspect’s original cognition, neglect of the suspect’s communicative intent,as well as the failure to capture the suspect’s correlational information in time and the failure to reason about the intent of the discourse when acting as a listener.Part Four contains suggestions for the application of association theory to interrogation questioning. In response to the correlation failures presented in Chapter 3,three major application suggestions are made for information correlation in interrogation questioning, contextual correlation in interrogation questioning, and psychological correlation in interrogation questioning,in order to provide a greater degree of theoretical guidance and correction to the correlation failures of investigators and to promote the efficient conduct of interrogation questioning.
