The Effects Of Caffeine Supplementation On Athletic Performance Of Elite Badminton Athletes

Abstract/Summary:
Purpose:This study aims to investigate the effects caffeine supplement on badminton specific performance in elite players.Methods:We organized a double-blind,placebo-controlled,randomized,crossover cohort.15 elite badminton players from Beijing Sport University were enrolled and randomized into caffeine ingestion group or a placebo group,and the fatigue degree of simulated badminton game was tested for 50 minutes.The athletes were given caffeine and placebo 45 minutes before the simulated badminton game,and the special sports performance and blood hormone changes before and after the simulated game were observed and compared.Main analysis indexes:badminton predictive decision test(AST),badminton kill accuracy test(SAT),badminton specific agility test(SRATAT)and repeated sprint running ability test(RST).Blood test indexes included blood lactate,blood glucose,adrenaline and β-endorphin.Results:(1)Before and after simulated badminton game experiment,AST in the caffeine group was significantly higher than experiment before(P<0.05),and there was no significant difference for placebo(P<0.05).Compared with the placebo group,AST in the caffeine group was significantly higher(P<0.05).(2)For SAT test,before and after the simulated game experiment,the caffeine group and the placebo group were lower than experiment before,but there was no significant difference between the caffeine group and the placebo group(P>0.05).(3)Before and after simulated fatigue For SRAT and RST test,caffeine group were significantly higher than experiment before(P<0.05),but there was no significant difference in the placebo group(P>0.05).So that,compared with the placebo group,the caffeine group was significantly higher than the placebo group(P<0.05).(4)After experiment,Epinephrine and β-endorphin both caffeine and placebo groups were higher than experiment before,and the increase in the caffeine group was more significant(P<0.001).Conclusion:Caffeine intake before exercise can effectively improve badminton performance of badminton players.The reason may have to do with increasing the amount of adrenaline and beta-endorphins in the blood,which improves the athletes’cognitive ability and reaction time.
