A Comparative Study Of Figure Skating Commentary Texts On Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022

Narratology was born and developed since 1960s.It has seen a shift from classical narratology,which focused on text and story,to post-structuralist narratology,which focuses on context and culture.The localization of narratology in China has led to comparative studies of Western narratology and traditional Chinese narratology.In the field of narrative studies,the study of narrative frames has also been a major focus of the discipline.Zhao Yiheng’s theory of narrator diegesis and segregation in his monograph A General Narratology explains the establishment of narrator frames in fictional narratives by introducing the concept of ’diegesis’.This theory can be used to explain the framing process of the narrator of a sporting event as a type of fictional narrative.Nowadays,the subject of sports narration has received a great deal of attention from scholars and has been developed in both theory and practice,but there is still a focus on practice rather than theory,so the application of narrative theory to the subject of sports narration fills a gap in the theory of sports narration to a certain extent.The research also enriches the academic achievements related to this sport.This study takes the commentary of IOC official,NBC and CMG as the object.The textual and narrative aspects of the commentary text of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games are analyzed to understand how different media commentators construct their narrative texts and narrative frameworks.Specifically,the textual composition of the figure skating commentary was analyzed by coding the text using Nvivo11plus.The specific coding steps are to summarize the basic concepts of the narration text through open coding;then to summarize the results of the open coding to obtain the conceptual categories of the narration text through axial coding;and finally to refine the themes of the narration text through selective coding.After the coding is completed,the differences would be analyzed in the composition of the narration text in different media by comparing the coding results.In the narrative analysis of figure skating commentary text,the narrator’s narrative frame is used as the starting point,and four dimensions of perspective frame,issue frame,grammatical frame and emotional frame are analyzed to understand the similarities and differences of narrators’ narrative strategies in different media.The study concludes that there are slight differences in the composition of narrative texts and differences in the construction of narrative frames across different linguistic and cultural contexts.Finally,the study analyzes the causes of the differences in sports commentary among the IOC official,NBC and CMG according to the comparative results,and concludes that(1)the IOC official and NBC construct Uber-Sport spectacles through the Olympic Games to satisfy their cultural industry output;(2)both NBC and CMG practice a localized communication and narrative strategy;(3)sports commentators also differ in their practice of sports journalism professionalism.
