Rural teachers are the backbone of rural education,and their living status is directly related to the overall ecology of rural education.Over the years,China has been committed to cultivating a high-quality rural teaching force,and has been working from the top to provide qualified teachers who can "go,stay and teach well" in rural areas.With the rapid advance of urbanization and the wave of modernization sweeping across the countryside,the countryside has become the main site of cultural encounters,and each tiny individual in it carries the weight of the changing times in the battle between modernity and tradition.The market economy-oriented development path introduces the countryside into the logic of commodity economy,the traditional vernacular culture fades away,and the inherent cultural order of the vernacular society is broken while a new cultural order is not yet established.The study explores the logic of action and cultural choices of rural teachers with modern rationality and initiative in their professional field,private life,and rural public space from the perspective of vernacular culture,identifies the problems that exist,and explores possible countermeasures.The study site was located in a rural elementary school with a long history in Cui Zhuang Town,L County,Shandong Province,and a detailed and comprehensive understanding of the geographical environment,economic development,customs and culture,and educational development of the area was made.Through participant observation,semi-structured interviews,and physical collection,the teachers were able to describe the real state of their work,life,and community interactions.The teachers generally reported that their daily work was trivial and heavy,with most of their workload coming from the constraints of the rural environment.In terms of private life and community interactions,the older teachers and the middle-aged and younger teachers presented very different states,with the younger teachers mostly confined within the school walls and slightly excluded from the countryside,while the older teachers who came from the countryside appeared to be insiders of the "small world" and showed a natural integration into the countryside.Each of the six teachers has different life experiences,different emotional perceptions and action plans for the local society and their own profession,and each of them makes his or her own rational choice in a specific cultural context.Insight into the teacher community through microscopic cases reveals that rural teachers are currently facing complex cultural dilemmas.The loss of vernacular culture on the road to modernization and the decline of the tradition of respecting teachers have led to the destruction of the traditional vernacular value order with positive meaning;the unending trend of teaching to the test,the single mode of teacher training and the unreasonable teacher management system have created a strong institutional and cultural environment;the strong tendency of rural teachers to "leave the land",their The strong tendency of rural teachers to "leave the land," their diminishing publicness,and the identity crisis they face have led to the loss of the main meaning of rural teachers.On the road to Chinese-style modernization and in the journey to realize rural revitalization,rural teachers are indispensable forces to practice the mission of education,prosper rural culture and promote rural development,and are bound to take up the responsibilities given by the times.Therefore,in the future,it is necessary to reshape the rural environment,strengthen the construction of rural culture,and improve the quality of rural people comprehensively;build a grassroots interactive platform,and support rural teachers to integrate into the countryside.At the institutional level,we should firmly integrate the orientation of urban and rural education,reform the rural education evaluation system,and improve the teacher education and training system.The school level should open up the school concept,create a cultural community of village schools;enrich cultural activities and set up a rural campus atmosphere.Rural teachers should improve their professional philosophy,cultivate local sentiment,participate in local life and assume cultural responsibility,improve their professionalism,create local curriculum and build cultural consciousness.
