Since the reform and opening up,the rural society has presented the dissolution and decline of public life. The backward construction of rural public cultural infrastructure and the loss of rural cultural elites lead to poor public cultural activities, the monotonous leisure life of the elderly, and their social needs cannot be effectively addressed. The No.1central document in 2023 emphasizes the need to deepen the construction of rural mass spiritual civilization, expand the practice center of civilization in the new era,and support rural self-run mass cultural activities. This document points out the direction of our rural cultural activities.Farmers are the main body of rural public culture construction, and giving full play to farmers’ initiative and participation needs government guidance and support from multiple subjects.Based on this, this paper mainly takes activity theory as the analytical framework, social work method as the means, and entertainment as the intervention point,to help the elderly to improve their entertainment life.First, based on the internship experience in Village Lin,southwest Shandong Province, data collection was carried out in Village Lin,through participant observation and in-depth interviews. An in-depth interview was conducted with eighteen elderly people and two members of the village committee in neighboring villages. The recreational life of the elderly people in rural areas were investigated and analyzed mainly from four parts: entertainment concept, entertainment resources, entertainment organization and entertainment consumption.According to the interview results, the entertainment life of the elderly is spontaneous and dispersed.Private and unitary nature; The utilization rate of entertainment resources is low;Entertainment consumption accounts for less. There are four reasons for this: the hollowing out of the main body of rural recreational activities; The unbalanced supply of government public cultural services; The loss of local sage culture; The old people’s consciousness of cultural subjects is weak. Finally, the group work method was adopted to intervene, and 12 old people were recruited to carry out 6 group activities to expand the recreation activities and recreation skills of the elderly. At the end of the activity, the process of the activity was evaluated and reflected.Through the feedback of team members,it can be found that group work plays a positive role in carrying out recreational activities for the elderly in rural areas. The implications of this study are as follows: First,in social work services, giving play to the initiative of the elderly can help to enhance the continuity of meeting their spiritual needs.Second, the establishing of the self-organization of the elderly is conducive to ensuring the continuity and stability of the elderly’s recreational life and spiritual needs. On the other hand,we need to reflect on the following aspects: first,at the present stage, the elderly are relatively unfamiliar with the social work major, which increases the time cost and human cost of rural social work;Secondly, how to expand the resource link in the process of rural social work practice needs further discussion.
