A Study Of The Language Rhythm Of Soccer Commentary

Since the introduction of modern soccer to China in the mid-19 th century,the institutional system and scale of the game have become increasingly sophisticated,and so has the modern soccer media industry in China.During the 2022 Qatar World Cup,10.6 billion people watched the 2022 World Cup live on Tik Tok alone.Under the trend of media convergence,the communication of soccer events has entered a new stage of all-media communication.The new media environment requires commentators to continuously improve their overall ability.At present,although the academic research on sports commentary is mature,and the research on commentators’ comprehensive ability is increasing.However,the research on commentators’ verbal ability is lesser and the scope of research is narrower.The language expression ability directly affects the communication power of the commentator,and the language rhythm is an important skill in all language expression skills.Therefore,it is especially important to conduct in-depth research on the language expression ability of commentator,especially the study of language rhythm in language expression ability.In this paper,I will analyze the language rhythm characteristics of commentators through literature method,observation and statistics method,comparative analysis method and simulation practice method,explore new strategies of using language rhythm in soccer commentary,and test the conclusions in the practice of my work.This study takes the 2021-2022 UEFA Champions League final replay video(Real Madrid CF vs.Liverpool F.C.)commentate by the commentary combination of Zhan Jun and Yang Chen and the commentary combination of Su Dong and Huang Jianxiang as the main object of observation,while take the replay video of 2021-2022 UEFA Champions League group stage and other matches in the knockout stage and some 2022 Qatar World Cup match replay as the secondary subjects.I transcribed the commentary language of the main observation objects into manuscripts and quantifying the relevant data,then analyzed the influence of the match rhythm and other factors on the rhythm of the commentary language,and finally summarized he strategies of the soccer commentators’ language rhythm changes.Afterwards,I applied the strategies obtained to my work and used academic theories such as media environment theory,agenda setting theory and gatekeeper theory to guide my practice.The work was then presented to people with a certain level of knowledge in soccer commentary for review,and finally adjustments were made based on feedback and suggestions.In the end,I have completed a soccer commentary work with rich and reasonable language rhythm.I hope to make some contribution to the improvement of language expression ability and comprehensive ability of the soccer commentary industry.After the research and creative practice,I found that the rhythm of the commentator’s language should not only follow the rhythm of the game,but also take into account the emotional and psychological changes of the audience caused by the change of the match rhythm and other various factors.In addition,this study also found that some commentators adjust the rhythm of their language only when they broadcast live information of the game,while the pre-game,halftime,and post-game commentary sessions,which break the normal rhythm of the game,are easily ignored by commentators.Therefore,commentators’ language rhythm should be adjusted reasonably and richly according to the changing rhythm of the game,the emotional and psychological changes of the audience,and the sessions that break the normal rhythm of the game such as pre-match,mid-match and post-match.
