| In this paper,we used content analysis to investigate the news reports on depression in People’s Daily,Health News, and Southern Weekend from 2011 to 2021,and crawled and compiled social media reports on depression in "Zhihu".We also collected and compiled the content of users’ questions on depression in the social media "Zhihu",and integrated the media images of bipolar depression as a negative and pessimistic group,a deviation from social expectations, and a dangerous factor in the social order. Then,we conducted a survey through questionnaires and in-depth interviews with general audiences who do not know much about depression and audiences who know more about depression, such as depressed people themselves, their relatives and friends, and experts and scholars,to explore their interpretations of depression and their angles of interpretation. The study found that: most of the traditional media in China do not have obvious emotional colors and tendencies in their coverage of bipolar depression topics, but the writing tends to emphasize negative information such as patients committing suicide and hurting others;in addition, questions related to bipolar depression groups in social media also tend to use negative words, and bipolar depression groups as a whole present a negative and negative media image. The media’s portrayal of bipolar depression and its patients fails to present the full picture in detail and thoroughly, leading to misunderstandings and stereotypes among the general audience, while the informed audience is dissatisfied with the media’s portrayal of bipolar depression patients. Therefore, the media should make more efforts to take up the social responsibility to give depressed people and their groups a more inclusive and broad living environment. |
