The Olympic Games are the world’s largest comprehensive games hosted by the International Olympic Committee.Beijing is the first "City of Two Olympics" in the history of the Olympic Games.During the period when China hosted the Olympic Games twice, the People’s Daily, the largest newspaper in China, devoted a special issue to the Olympics, which highlighted the mainstream media’s attention to Olympic issues. In addition, after narratology was introduced into the field of journalism,a research boom has been set off in the academic world.Although some scholars have used news narratology as an entry point to study the Olympic news narratives of mainstream media, according to the results of a search on the Knowledge Network,no one has yet used the special issue of the double Olympic Games as a research object of news narratology.Based on this background, the following questions are raised: What are the characteristics of the news coverage of the double Olympic special issue with news narratology as the base of research? How do they construct the narrative framework of Olympic coverage? What are the commonalities and characteristics of the Winter Olympics and Summer Olympics special issues over time? What lessons can the practice of the double Olympic special issue provide for mainstream media in writing Olympic reports? Thus, using journalism, classical narrative, and news narrative theories as the research framework,200 news reports of the Olympic Special Issue of the Winter Olympic Games and 800 news reports of the Olympic Special Issue of the Summer Olympic Games were selected as the research samples through the compound method of equal-ratio sampling and random sampling. The content analysis method was also used to study the elements and characteristics of the news narratives of the double Olympic special issues of People’s Daily and to analyze the commonalities and characteristics of the Olympic special issues of the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics from a quantitative perspective. In addition, using textual analysis as the analysis logic and classical narrative theory as the research framework,we explore the significant features of the double Olympic special issues in terms of narrative discourse, narrative structure, and narrative strategy. On this basis,we propose to build a narrative framework for the Olympic Games in mainstream media by returning to humanism, increasing the daily narrative of the Olympic Games, and improving the interestingness of Olympic news.Through the study of the text and discourse of the double Olympic special issue, the journalistic and narratological frameworks can better explain the news narrative characteristics of the double Olympic special issue, which constructs the news narrative framework of Olympic coverage in terms of narrative discourse, narrative structure, and narrative strategy, and has reasonable consistency and difference. In terms of high consistency, both issues tend to use the inverted pyramid and Wall Street Journal style structure,301-800 words narrative length, hidden narrative subject, omniscient narrative perspective and, tend to use Olympic characters,Olympic activities, and Olympic culture as the narrative objects. In terms of differences, compared with the Summer Olympics special issue, the Winter Olympics special issue tends to be more multi-narrative and tends to increase the narrative perspective of semi-knowledgeable perspective,Olympic characters, and Olympic culture as narrative objects, and the narrative techniques of private narrative and detailed narrative. The discourse can be glimpsed from the text, and the values under the news narrative discourse of People’s Daily’s Olympic special issue have shifted-from the state orientation to the people orientation gradually. The open, communicable, and up-to-date news narrative mode of Olympic coverage not only originates from the improvement of the media’s literacy and professionalism but also is driven by the change of China’s Olympic philosophy and the country’s economic and social progress and national strength.
