A Study On The Narrative Image Of The Cover Of China’s Ethnic Groups(1957-2021)

Founded in 1957,China’s ethnic groups is the earliest ethnic journal in New China,with the largest circulation and the most authoritative among all Chinese ethnic periodicals.In the past 64 years,every historical stage of the development and progress of ethnic minorities has been completely recorded by it,and its video materials are representative and characteristic of the times.This paper takes the cover image of China’s ethnic groups from 1957 to 2021 as the research object,and bases itself on the relevant theories of iconography and narratology such as "decisive moment",visual rhetoric,and temporalization of space.Through the close reading of images and the statistics of image elements,the focus of research is on human-centered focused,scattered,panoramic and major time cover images.It mainly focuses on how the cover of China’s ethnic groups magazine has undergone,what are the factors that have undergone this change,what narrative strategies are used,and what kind of narrative effect has been produced.Based on the combination of image narrative theory and representative image interpretation,this paper explores the display of ethnic minority images in various historical stages,the "change" and "unchanged" in narrative evolution,and the strategy of cover image narrative presented in the image narrative process of China’s ethnic groups.This study argues that in the narrative evolution of China’s ethnic groups,the change in the theme of the cover has caused many changes in the layout design of China’s ethnic groups.The combined effect of social environment,economy and policy affects the selection of the cover image,and the change of publicity content is the core reason for the name change of the magazine.In the narrative process,what remains unchanged is the intertextual relationship between the cover image and the news headline,and the pre-narrative function of the cover image on the content of the article is unchanged,and at the same time,the transmission of the cover image to the universal emotions of human beings,the recording of historical facts,the attention to the daily life of ethnic minorities and other characteristics have always remained unchanged.The Ethnic Unity Editorial Department has achieved cover image narrative through strategies such as reproduction of ethnic minority rituals on the cover,effective use of images and words,and expression in time and space.These strategies have enabled the cover content of " China’s ethnic groups " to be continuously perceived,recognized and shared by domestic and foreign audiences.Facing the realistic context of the era of picture reading,paying attention to the choice of the audience can find that the integration of image narrative and text narrative constructs a new narrative structure relationship,which constructs a more diverse audiovisual new discourse,and this law is also traced in journal cover image narrative.
