This study is based on <Tiangong Kaiwu> and related Japanese technical books.<Tiangong Kaiwu> is a scientific and technical text published at the end of the Ming dynasty, describing the technical experience of traditional Chinese production sectors such as agriculture, industry and handicrafts.Since its publication,it has been disseminated to Japan, contributing to the development of modern Japanese science and technology. In the process of cultural diffusion,Chinese scientific and technological knowledge was accepted by Japanese officials and authors, and spread to all classes in Japan through hand-copying and engraving, and was actually applied to Japanese production. This is the process of cross-cultural diffusion of our traditional scientific and technological knowledge,as represented by<Tiangong Kaiwu> to Japan.Using documentary analysis, textual analysis, and theories related to cross-cultural communication, this paper examines the journey of <Tiangong Kaiwu> to Japan and the path of its dissemination in Japan, and explores the interaction of <Tiangong Kaiwu> after its departure to Japan and its impact on modern Japanese science.Based on this, the main points of this thesis are as follows:The first chapter compares the basis and background of the eastern transmission of Chinese books during the Ming dynasty, against the background of the mature development of traditional Chinese science and technology, the decline of mentalism and the rise of practical thinking at the end of the Ming dynasty, and the acceptance of the Sino-Japanese book trade. On this basis, the second chapter provides an overview of the contents and editions of <Tiangong Kaiwu>,as well as the time and means of its eastern transfer.Further information on the contents and editions of <Tiangong Kaiwu> is analysed. At the same time, the time and channels of the eastern transmission of <Tiangong Kaiwu> to Japan are sorted out.On the basis of the historical documentation, the basic history of the cross-cultural transmission of <Tiangong Kaiwu> is presented.Chapter 3 compares the ways in which <Tiangong Kaiwu> was disseminated in Japan and its collections after its eastern journey. It focuses on its dissemination in Japan, introducing the main modes of dissemination, the main subjects of dissemination, and the main vehicles of content dissemination in Japan. It introduces the three editions of<Tiangong Kaiwu> published in Japan, the Sugabon, the Ebun, and the Yabu, and compares the references to it in Japanese books. It also introduces the collection of <Tiangong Kaiwu>in Japan.Chapter 4 explores the diffusion of science and technology in Japan after <Tiangong Kaiwu> eastern journey and its impact on modern Japanese science from a cultural localisation perspective. How did Japanese agricultural books, science and technology interact with <Tiangong Kaiwu>? Focuses on the references to the technical knowledge and technological tools of <Tiangong Kaiwu> in Japanese books. It also explores the influence of t <Tiangong Kaiwu> on modern Japanese science. This study argues that the dissemination of<Tiangong Kaiwu> in Japan was a process of cross-cultural transmission and a process of cultural exchange between China and Japan. It promoted innovation and change in Japanese science and technology culture, and also provided a path of experience that can be drawn on for cultural exchange and mutual appreciation of civilisations between China and Japan.
