With the fierce competition of traditional credit business, commercial banks begin to transform and promote the development of new business in order to improve their own advantages and increase profits, and then the proportion of off-balance sheet business in each bank gradually shows a positive growth trend.However,off-balance sheet business is also a double-edged sword, which not only brings profits to commercial banks, but also brings them a series of risks. At the same time, the improvement of off-balance sheet business will also affect the ability of commercial banks to serve the real economy, which is a necessary condition for the high-quality development of the real economy. At present, the academic research on the impact of off-balance sheet business on the ability of commercial banks to serve the real economy is not deep enough, and the research on the influence mechanism is not very clear. Therefore, the impact on the ability of commercial banks to serve the real economy has important theoretical value and practical significance.Based on literature review and theoretical analysis, this paper analyzes the research results and research methods of domestic and foreign scholars on the impact of off-balance sheet business on the ability of commercial banks to serve the real economy, analyzes the characteristics of China’s commercial banks’ off-balance sheet business, and explores the status quo and laws on the ability of commercial banks to serve the real economy. It also analyzes the specific mechanism of the effect of off-balance sheet business on the ability of commercial banks to serve the real economy and puts forward the corresponding research hypothesis.Further,This paper uses the wind database to collect data from 30 commercial banks from 2010 to 2020,Taking the proportion of off-balance sheet business income to the total bank operating income as the core explanatory variable,Taking the total assets of the bank, the capital leverage ratio, the number of employees of the bank, the yield of the bank, the bank liability ratio and the bank income per share as the control variables and the panel regression model is constructed and the regression is carried out.On the basis of the analysis of robustness, heterogeneity and endogeneity, the core regression conclusion is drawn:The ability of commercial banks’off-balance sheet business to serve the real economy is weakening;the negative effect of off-balance sheet business of non-state-owned banks is large, while that of state-owned banks is small;the rate of return adjust the impact of off-balance sheet business on the bank to serve the real economy.Further, based on the analysis and research conclusions, this paper puts forward the following suggestions:A committee for supervising banks’off-balance sheet business should be established to guide the flow of off-balance sheet business funds to the real economy;the capacity of the state-owned banks to serve the real economy should be further brought into play;the efficiency of commerical banks should be improved, the rate of return of commercial banks should be raised, and then to enhance the ability of the commercial banks to serve the real economy to make the corresponding contribution.
