| Since the birth of economics, state intervention has been an important topic in economics.Different economic schools hold different views and attitudes towards state intervention.Mainstream economics criticizes the distortion of the market and the reduction of efficiency caused by the improper intervention of the state, but also advocates the use of intervention to solve the problem of market failure, and affirms the positive role of the state system in establishing social rules, ensuring social order and reducing transaction costs. As a school of liberalism, the Austrian School emphasizes reducing state intervention as much as possible, and retaining the basic functions of the state, which still retains rationality for state intervention. As the fifth generation economist of the Austrian school,Rothbard goes further on the road of "liberalism",completely denies the legitimacy of the existence of the state, opposes all forms of state intervention, and advocates a completely free market and a free society of anarchic capitalism. This paper makes a systematic study of Rothbard’s theory of state intervention.First of all, starting from the economic methodology,Rothbard basically inherits the methodology of subjectivism and individualism of the traditional Austrian School as well as Mises’ transcendental and deductive methodology, but to a different extent. On the basis of methodology,Rothbard emphasizes that political philosophy should provide value judgment for economics to ensure the scientificity and value neutrality of economics. Therefore, this paper sorts Rothbard’s political philosophy system with natural law as the starting point and property rights as the core, focuses on the concept of property rights and its application in reality, and analyzes the state from the perspective of property rights.Taking the theory of political philosophy as the value guide, this paper studies the main content of Rothbard’s state intervention theory. This paper not only discusses Rothbard’s economic analysis of state intervention, but also pays attention to Rothbard’s deduction from market defects to state intervention. In addition,it also discusses the nature of state intervention and Rothbard’s conclusion of anarchic capitalism. All parts together make his state intervention theory become a theoretical system with complete structure.Later, this paper also evaluates each part of Rothbard’s theory, affirming his analytical ideas and research perspective, while pointing out the lack of objectivity and reality of his theory.Under the inspiration of Rothbard’s theory, this paper also reflects on China’s economic reality, points out some deficiencies existing in the practice of state intervention, and puts forward corresponding countermeasures. Finally,in the conclusion, this paper summarizes and evaluates Rothbard’s state intervention theory, and points out its important value in the history of economic thought. It should be noted that the state, based on its coercive force, has the function of "protection" and also has the ability of "destruction".At present and for a long time to come,Rothbard’s anarchic capitalist society is still unrealistic, and the state will continue to play a role as an important organizational form of human society. Therefore, how to give full play to the positive role of the state and mitigate its negative impacts will be a problem we need to continue to think about. In thinking and practice, state power gradually explores the reasonable ways and limits of intervention, and realizes self-supervision and self-restraint,which is the common goal of many state intervention theories in the history of economic thought. |
