In the new development stage, boosting consumer spending has become one of the main drivers of domestic economic growth in China’s dual-cycle new development pattern.Especially as rural areas in China have just completed their comprehensive poverty alleviation goals and rural residents’ incomes continue to rise, there is great potential for increased consumption demand in these areas.Unlocking rural consumption potential and promoting the upgrade of rural resident consumption structures is of significant importance for expanding domestic demand and building a strong domestic cycle. At the same time, the rapid development of the digital economy domestically and the acceleration of the digitization of traditional industries have changed the existing production and sales models. In addition, the digital development of the service industry, such as digital finance and mobile payments, has altered the existing consumption environment and methods. Moreover, the digitization of agriculture has also transformed traditional agricultural production methods.Relying on the development of industrial digitization, promoting the upgrade of rural resident consumption structures is a powerful measure to seize the opportunities presented by the digital economy and unlock rural consumption potential. Thus, clarifying the impact mechanism and pathway of industrial digitization development on rural resident consumption structure upgrades and taking targeted protective measures will enable both the supply and demand sides to progress hand in hand.Based on existing research results and theoretical analyses of industrial digitization and consumption structure upgrades, this paper constructs an evaluation index system for industrial digitization and uses entropy methods to measure the level of industrial digitization development in 30 Chinese provinces from 2013 to 2020 using panel data.It then uses a two-way fixed-effects model to test the moderating mediating effects of industrial digitization on rural resident consumption structure upgrades.Empirical results show that:(1)The development of industrial digitization significantly increases rural resident consumption expenditure and the proportion of survival-oriented and development-oriented consumption expenditure;(2)Industrial digitization improves the level of rural resident consumption expenditure and consumption structure through increased income and improved supply-side levels, where rural resident income and supply-side levels play a partial mediating role;(3)In the moderated mediation effect, education level not only has a positive regulatory effect on the direct effect of industrial digitization on rural resident consumption structure upgrades but also has a positive regulatory effect on the first half of the mediating role of income levels and the second half of the mediating role of supply-side levels.Based on these theoretical and empirical research conclusions, this paper proposes policy suggestions in five aspects:accelerating the development of agricultural digitization,"digital+supply","digital+regulation","digital+circulation" and improving social security mechanisms.
