| This study assesses the trade opportunities and challenges for Turkey under China’s Belt and Road Initiative(BRI).The BRI is a Chinese-led initiative to create a network of infrastructure projects and economic partnerships across Asia,Africa, and Europe. The study finds that the BRI has the potential to significantly increase Turkey’s trade opportunities with China and other participating countries. However,it also identifies several challenges, including the need for greater investment in transportation infrastructure and the need to address existing trade imbalances. The study highlights the importance of transportation infrastructure for the success of the BRI and the potential benefits for Turkey.Turkey is strategically located at the crossroads of Asia and Europe and has the potential to become a major transportation hub under the BRI.However, the country must invest in its transportation infrastructure, including rail and road networks,to fully benefit from the initiative. In addition, the study identifies the need to address existing trade imbalances.Turkey currently has a trade deficit with China, which could be exacerbated by increased trade under the BRI.The study recommends that Turkey diversify its export markets and focus on high-value-added products to address this imbalance. To sum up,this research offers a detailed analysis of Turkey’s trade prospects and obstacles related to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.Nevertheless, there is ample scope to investigate the implications of BRI for Turkey and its capacity to promote economic and social growth.Future studies should focus on identifying the industries and areas in Turkey that can derive maximum benefits from the BRI and exploring the possible risks and difficulties that could arise due to enhanced economic connections with China. Also, the study recommends that further studies should assess the impact of the BRI on Turkey’s small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs): SMEs play a crucial role in Turkey’s economy, accounting for a significant portion of its exports and employment. As a result,it is critical to assess the impact of the BRI on Turkey’s SMEs.This includes examining their awareness and understanding of the initiative, their engagement with BRI partner countries, and the potential benefits and challenges for their businesses. |
