The twenty-first century has seen a whole new level of industrial civilisation thanks to the booming social and economic development, but also at a huge social cost.Humans are generally aware of the impact of production methods and consumption habits on the environment. In September 2020,China raised the topic of "carbon neutrality and carbon peaking" for the first time at the general debate of the 75 th session of the United Nations General Assembly, further defining the overall requirements for the development of green finance in China in the coming decades."The 13 th Five-Year Plan emphasises the need to deepen structural reform on the supply side, while continuing to clarify the development of a green economy, and to gradually implement innovative development methods, promote pollution prevention and control, and organically integrate green environmental protection with financial development." The14 th Five-Year Plan emphasises the comprehensive promotion of high-quality development, with green as its distinctive feature. As an integral part of the financial system and social development, commercial banks can play an important role in regulating and allocating resources more effectively. The goal of sustainable development can be achieved by increasing or reducing the amount of loans granted,i.e.by reducing credit to companies that are harmful to the environment and increasing credit support to environmentally friendly companies.Green credit not only enables the realisation of the concept of green development, but also responds to the inevitable requirement to develop a green economy. In the context of the development of green credit, this paper considers the issue of optimising the business performance of commercial banks from the perspective of the "three natures".Based on the integration of existing theoretical results and relevant literature, this paper provides a detailed discussion of the connotations and theories of green credit and commercial banks’ business performance. It also discusses in depth the development status of green credit in commercial banks in China and points out its problems. In the empirical analysis,18 Chinese listed commercial banks are selected as a sample, and the relevant data of each commercial bank from 2010 to 2021 are used for the study.A panel model is established to explore how the development of green credit affects the business performance of listed commercial banks in China in three dimensions: profitability, credit risk and liquidity respectively. The study shows that the implementation of green credit activities can counteract credit risk and have a positive impact on liquidity, but has a negative effect on profitability in the short term.In addition, this paper also divides 18 commercial banks into three categories according to their nature and conducts a sub-sample regression study to find that the development of green credit has a negative impact on state-owned commercial banks and urban commercial banks in the short term, while it is beneficial to the improvement of the business performance of joint-stock commercial banks.Based on the results of the empirical study, this paper proposes that the optimisation of the business performance of commercial banks in China should be adjusted in the following aspects from the national government, commercial banks and enterprises respectively: the national government should improve the internal and external incentives and restrictions on green credit, improve the information disclosure and communication mechanism, and set a minimum limit for green loans of banks;commercial banks should formulate a specific green credit rating system for enterprises The commercial banks should develop specific green credit rating systems for enterprises, formulate sustainable development strategies, strengthen green credit management, enhance talent training and expand the service targets of green credit business;enterprises should take the initiative to disclose environmental information, etc.
