| The report of the 20 th Party Congress pointed out that high-quality development is the primary task of building a modern socialist country in China. At this stage,China is experiencing a critical period of shifting from high-speed economic growth to high-quality economic development, and the comprehensive implementation of high-quality economic development is a major trend in current and future economic development, while how to promote high-quality development in China has become a hot topic for academic discussion. In recent years, the rapid development of Internet information technology has enabled the digital economy to achieve significant results, and the Internet has become an important and indispensable tool in production and life.In the information age,the Internet plays an important role in transforming and upgrading the industrial structure, promoting employment opportunities and improving production efficiency, and it is also known as the "new engine" for quality and efficiency improvement of the economy. As a new technology, the birth of the Internet has broken the previous economic and social development pattern, optimized the traditional industrial structure, digital transformation has realized the cross-time and space communication of economic subjects, and the synergy effect has improved production efficiency, and the digital industrialization process has boosted consumer demand and provided a driving force for economic and social development. Therefore, the Internet has become a possibility to promote the high-quality development of China’s economy. This paper first analyzes the direct effect of the Internet in promoting high-quality economic development from five channels: innovation, coordination, green, openness, and sharing;then discusses the mechanism of the intermediary effect between the two from the perspective of regional synergy;considering the network effect and spatial spillover effect,it also theoretically explores the possible nonlinear spillover effect of the Internet as well as the spatial spillover effect, thus proposing four research hypotheses. In order to verify the rationality of the research hypotheses, the empirical analysis method is used to test them, and a total of 279 prefecture-level city panel data from 30 provinces in China are selected to construct multidimensional comprehensive indicators, and the principal component analysis method and entropy value method are used to downscale the data to obtain comprehensive indicators, and the econometric regression analysis is conducted by establishing fixed effect models, mediating effect models, threshold models, and spatial econometric models, and the China is divided according to city hierarchy and geographic location to be explored more deeply. It is found that:(1)the Internet can effectively promote high-quality economic development in China, and has a positive impact on the four dimensions of innovation, coordination, openness and sharing;(2)the Internet can also improve the level of regional synergy and thus promote high-quality economic development, and regional synergy has a partial intermediary effect in this process;(3)the Internet promotes high-quality economic development, and there is a double threshold,i.e.,a non-linear spillover effect.(4)The Internet and high-quality economic development have a high degree of autocorrelation in space, and the regression results show that the indirect spillover effect is mutually significant, indicating that the Internet not only promotes the high-quality economic development of the region, but also promotes the neighboring cities.(5)By region, the positive impact of Internet on high-quality development in central cities is better than that in peripheral cities, and this positive impact is highest in the eastern region, followed by the western region, and is not significant in the central region. |
