The implementation of common prosperity is the essential requirement of socialism. As common prosperity enters a new historical stage, resolving the contradiction between people’s need for a better life and unbalanced and insufficient development requires empowering farmers with equal opportunities. Therefore, this study explores the mechanism of the impact of multidimensional equal opportunities on farmers’ happiness in the context of common prosperity and the mediating role of future expectations in it,in order to provide a theoretical basis and action guidance for realising farmers’ need for a better life. This paper adopts an empirical analysis approach to investigate three aspects:(1)Constructing research indicators of equal opportunities and farmers’ happiness in the context of common prosperity.By analysing the connotation characteristics and realisation mechanism of common prosperity, the study of farmers’ equal opportunities and happiness is incorporated into the logical framework of common prosperity, whereby equal opportunities are divided into three dimensions of competition, education and social security, and happiness is divided into "common"happiness,"affluent and "affluence" dimensions of well-being.Exploratory factor analysis(EFA)was used to measure the research indicators and to justify the rationality of the indicators.(2)Propose a research hypothesis.Based on the current status of the study,it was proposed that equal opportunity significantly affects farmers’ happiness, that equal opportunity in each of the three dimensions significantly affects farmers’ happiness in the "common" and "affluent" dimensions, and that future expectations play a mediating role when equal opportunity significantly affects farmers’ happiness.A total of 15 research hypotheses in five categories were developed.(3)Design of the study and testing of hypotheses. The independent, dependent, mediating and control variables were selected and statistically analysed based on three data sources, namely the National Bureau of Statistics database, the Chinese Financial Yearbook and the China Household Tracking Survey(CFPS)data, and an OLS econometric model. The OLS model was used to gradually add control variables, and the research hypotheses were regressed and verified;endogeneity tests were conducted using the mean of each county and city data instead of individual data;and robustness tests were conducted using the variable substitution method. The results of the study show that:(1)Equal opportunity has a significant effect on farmers’ happiness from the perspective of common wealth(Coef=0.401,p<0.01).Among the three dimensions of equal opportunity, equal opportunity in competition had the most significant effect(Coef=0.312,p<0.01).When the well-being sub-dimension was examined, equality of opportunity in competition did not play a role in farmers’ well-being on the ’common’ dimension(p=0.584),but had a significant effect on the ’wealthy’ dimension(p<0.01);education and social security, both of which have an equal opportunity effect on the’common’ and ’affluent’ dimensions of farmers’ well-being.(2)The key to improving farmers’ happiness. The key factors for improving farmers’ happiness were the "common" dimension of common wealth and the "affluence" dimension of quality of life, expanding the coverage of low income insurance, narrowing the gap between urban and rural medical resources, and Future expectations are closely related to the improvement of farmers’ sense of well-being.(3)Future expectations play a partly mediating role in the process of equal opportunity on farmers’ happiness(mediating effect of 12.31%),acting as a bridge between equal opportunity and farmers’ happiness.Based on the findings of the study, three policy recommendations are proposed:(1)optimise equal opportunities in competition to improve farmers’ quality of life;(2)promote equal opportunities in education to meet farmers’ expectations;(3)implement equal opportunities in social security to share the fruits of development, with a view to increasing farmers’ motivation, stimulating rural vitality, promoting common prosperity and meeting farmers’ concerns for a better life.
