Identifying future competitors of an enterprise is very important for the current decision-making of an enterprise.Once a potential competitor turns into a direct competitor,it will often bring a huge impact to the enterprise,and even endanger the market position of the enterprise.Therefore,enterprises need to identify potential competitors as early as possible,and adjust their innovation strategies in a timely manner,in order to fully respond to the fatal crisis that may occur in the future,so as to prepare for a rainy day.Weak signals are forward-looking and predictive,with characteristics similar to those of potential competitors.At present,weak signals have been widely used in the field of emerging technology identification,but there are few studies on the identification of potential competitors.Therefore,this study uses the patent text as the information source to construct a two-stage potential competitor identification model based on weak signals.Among them,the first stage is weak signal identification,which mainly includes using the LDA model to classify texts,and using weak functions to filter the topics to obtain weak signal topics.The second stage is the identification of potential competitors,which is mainly based on the average semantic volume of patents,the number of patents and corporate strategic information to comprehensively measure the resource similarity and market commonality of competitors to identify potential competitors.In order to verify the effectiveness of the two-stage potential competitor identification method based on weak signals,this study takes Kodak and TSMC as the focus enterprises to conduct empirical research respectively.Among them,one is to carry out empirical research with Kodak,which is in the leading position in the field of traditional film technology,as a focal company for the period of transition between traditional film cameras and emerging digital cameras.The other is to carry out empirical research on the technology growth period of the same technology track in the semiconductor field,with TSMC,which is in a leading position in the market,as the focus company.It is worth noting that due to the different competitive situations in which the two empirical evidences are located,after detecting weak signals,in order to amplify the value of weak signals,the empirical evidence will adopt different classification methods according to the competitive contexts to obtain weak signal topic sets,which are more accurate.to identify potential competitors.Based on the previous literature,this study introduces weak signals into the potential competitor identification framework,constructs a two-stage potential competitor identification model based on weak signals,improves the competitor theory,and provides a new method for the identification of potential competitors.perspective.The empirical results verify the validity and universality of the model,and the empirical results show that the identification of potential competition based on weak signals is much earlier than the market performance.Enterprises should pay attention to the identification of potential competitors and adjust their innovation strategies in time to deal with future risks.
