The Doctor dissertation presents a BEM computer software system for the optimization and display. In the thesis the boundary element method for planar elasticity and plate bending problems are introduced, the thesis includes the optimization design for these two kinds of problems. For planar problem the body forces, such as gravitional loads and rotational inertia loads can be computed with very high accuracy. For plate bending problem the three-equation BEM scheme is used, which had been proposed in some earlier work by the outhor of this thesis;the domain integral is done by analytic integration. The corresponding computer software system bas been developed, including the BEM analysis modules of planar problem and plate bending problem, the optimization module and the color plotting module. The thesis presents the mathematical formulations together with many numerical examples. Then some engineering problems by BEM have been performed. They are the optimization of the connecting rods of some internal combustion engines and mud pumps, and some supported plate structures. From the results of computation, it can be concluded that the proposed schemes will be efficient and the system is significant for engineering applications.
