Images are an important source for human to obtain information from the world, while colors are the most important content of them. Everyday there are uncountable images are transferred from one device to another and from one place to another. Internet has greatly advanced the phenomenon. The destination of color management is to obtain color consistency across different software applications and imaging devices. It's necessary to establish a standard, high-quality and open color management mechanism to satisfy the increasing demand on high-quality color reproduction.ICC Color Management Mechanism is an open, vendor-neutral, cross-platform color management architecture. It has been accepted by operating systems, applications, and device manufacturers and has become the de-facto standard. It was approved as an International Standard, ISO 15076 in the end of 2005. The ICC standard has continued to evolve, but even the latest version 4 update did not address some of the flaws and shortcomings identified during years of practical implementations. At the same time, color science has a prodigious development, which is deemed to promote color management solution. In 2005 Microsoft has partnered with Canon to develop a new Windows Color System architecture for Microsoft(?) Windows Vista operating system which is going to be released in 2007. WCS has adopted a number of renovations including use of the latest CIE color appearance model (CAM) recommendations (now CIECAM02), measurement-based profiles, modular separation of devices, and gamut mapping modules among others.This dissertation lucubrates on the kernel of ICC Color Management Mechanism, analyses its advantages and disadvantages, then put forward an improved mechanism. At last, the improvement has been realized. The main works and creations are as the following:1. The theory and important concepts of color management based on appearance model are discussed and the existing color management solutions including sRGB standard and WCS are analyzed.2. After analyzing ICC Color Management Mechanism, two underlying issues are concluded. They are predefined color rendering mode and the PCS(profile connection space). Based on solutions to the two issues, an improvement mechanism is brought forward which adopts run-time color rendering mode and iCAM image appearance model. In the additional, the dissertation put forward an idea, automatic rendering intent selection to make color management intelligent.3. This dissertation gives the detail on the theories and implemental methods on color appearance model, including iCAM and three constituent color appearance models, IPT space, S-CIEALB and CIECAM02.
