PrefaceResearch on heavy metal pollution of water body began in the 60's of 20th century, and has been given increasingly concern owing to the facts that health effects as well as environment problems by heavy metal pollution of water body initiated. Although there has been a full understanding to the chemistry structures and properties of these heavy metal elements, but their storage and the development courses in the environment especially in the water body, the healthy effect and the research of its preventive measure for the human body, have not attached enough importance internationally until the ends of 60's of this century. It has been proved presently that the various heavy metal elements, in spite of his existence in the natural environment, can also give rise to harm for almost all living things under very low consistency. Once the heavy metal in the environment enters the human body, it tends to be slow in its clearance up and can be difficult to shed the poison by the organism of metabolism, thus, gives rise to the living things storing up and the effect of magnifying.Being one of the developing countries, China is now facing the problem of severe water shortage and pollution in the river and lake systems. Some major lakes and rivers in our country have been pollutedby the heavy metal in different levels, and some have exerts great influences on the Eco-environment and the public health. Xinjiang is one of the backwards districts categorized in western economy in our country, the water resources have considered in the very short circumstances, and the distribution also appear very disequilibrium. Besides, large number of "three wastes" from industry and the livings in the water body pollution were also very serious, and with the increasing of heavy metal contents in various chiefly lakes systems annually, it has formed the potential threat for the development of utilization and the ecology environmental protection of Xinjiang water resourcesIt is prerequisite to learn the relationship between heavy metal contents of water body and the environmental pollution for understanding the health effects of heavy metal pollution of water body. At home, most of the studies on the water body pollution and its health effects have been focused on the organic pollutants, and mostly concerning the current investigations, the comprehensive evaluation about the sources, history, and the potential health effects of heavy metal pollution of water body sediments using the combined method of environmental geography and the environmental hygiene has rarely been seen. The development of the analytical technique of water body sediment could be divided into three stages: the environment geography applying, the combination of water body sediment analysis and environmental pollution, and the combined analyses of magnetic susceptibility and radionuclide and heavy metal consistency measurements. This work presented here was the subsection of the subject undertook by the Manchester Geography Association about the relationship between the geological development of lakes and swamps and environment pollution using sediment profile analyses and it was to be finished in the Department of Environmental Resources and Health of Salford University, UK. The purpose of this study using both the environment magneticsusceptibility and the radionuclide measurements in exploring the relationship between heavy metal concentration of sediments and environmental pollution is, by introducing the first-rate advanced method, to evaluate the status quo and history of heavy metal pollution of water sources of Xinjiang province as well as that of our country, to study the present situation and the process of heavy metal pollution of the water body sediment from the hygiene aspect, thus, to provide a advanced methodology for establishing the environment background and environment quality standard of heavy metals in soil and water body sediment. With the help of this, the corresponding preventive and protecting approaches can be laid do...
